p.1 #1 · 5D Mark I Memory Cards

I know the largest card the 5D Mark I can handle is a 16 GB card, but what is the fastest card it can handle? My research seems to indicate it will take a UDMA card, but it won't write at the speeds that the UDMA card can handle. Does anyone have a decent sense of the fastest card for the 5D Mark I?

Well I’m pretty sure the 5D will handle a 32GB card with the latest firmware. This topic from 2012 talks about it, https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1127212/0. I use Sandisk Extreme IV in mine. I’m sure there faster than the camera can write.

Thanks for the link. I did a search but could not find a thread that answered my questions.

Yep , its slow so don't waste money on the fast cards if the 5D is the only use .

The RG database has been stripped of all the old bodies now , but I seem to remember when i looked the 5D was slower than the 40D and the 40D was about 10mbps top whack . The 5D is probably about 8mbps
It wasnt until the 5D2 - 50D release that things got any faster .

I am pretty sure the 32GB sandisk cards I have are working fine in my 5D.

I have noticed that with some cards though I have to format in my MKII in order to use all the space in my 5D but haven't figured out why that is.

I've read elsewhere that a card in the 5D1 will not format at 32 GB; it will only format at 16 GB. I've also read that most memory cards are backwards compatible, which means you can probably put a UDMA 7 1000x card in a 5D1, but it will only operate at a much slower speed.

So, Ian, a new SanDisk 16 GB Extreme card is overkill, eh?
