p.1 #1 · Used Canon 17-55mm f2.8 or a Refurbished one?
I want to buy a canon 17-55mm lens for my 60D...A refurbished one one at canon's store goes for $801 with 3 months warrantee which I might never use because I'm in africa atm while a used one goes for about $750. Which would you get?
Oh..& a big Shout out to everybody here on Fredmiranda...I've learnt a ton of things from your guys!!

I'm wondering the same thing, albeit about another lens. So, I'm also interested in any advice anyone can offer.
I have owned the 17-55mm 2.8 and can testify that it is an amazing lens. If you get the copy I had (that was stolen) then you'd certainly get a deal because mine was always clean and well cared for!

I Just found out that the tax will take it up to about $860 on the refurbished one...that sucks because I was planning on getting the canon 85mm 1.8 to compliment it.
Good to know your copy was sharp..I was considering the sigma 17-50 bt I can't deal with the QC issues. If something is wrong with it then I'm stuck with a bad lens.

I was looking into the refurbished route for the 17-55, but Cali state tax and shipping pushes it towards $900. Looking for a nice used one now
I guess I should do that too...so I can save sum money for another lens.

You trade some degree of confidence that you get with the warranteed refurb for the slightly lower cost that comes with less certainty regarding the used lens.
If you don't know the seller and the history of the lens, you might feel that $51 is a small cost to pay for some peace of mind. (Keep in mind that one reason people sell such lenses, though not the only reason, is that they think they have a "bad copy.") If you do know and trust the seller and know a the history of the lens you might well be willing to forego the warranty.

Is $50-100 worth the peace of mind that the manufacture is guarantying that the product is up to factory specs? At current price differential, it is a no brainier to me.

@Dan Its like $100 more wen u add taxes...would you still go for d refurbished one?
As I wrote earlier, that's a personal question and it depends on a bunch of variables: how much you know about the seller and the history of the equipment, how dear that $100 is to you, how important a bit of added security by means of a warranty is to you, the difficulties of the two types of transactions.
There is no single right answer to this. I have purchased equipment new, refurbished, and used.
