Charlie, I really like the way the background appears in this picture. It has a very nostalgic feel, the way it is a tighter range of gray tones... It really does a nice job of setting off the people in the group in the foreground.

I'm guessing the older couple in the front are ma and pa of the family.
Completing the row are their three unmarried daughters.
In the back are two more of their children plus their spouses. One grand child,
and the woman on the left... ? Maybe another daughter.
Although at the time China had a "one couple- one child" policy, farmers were exempt because it took large families to run small farms. Reason? Human labor did the work- not machines.
