My daughter just got a Canon Rebel T4i and is happily shooting away. Unfortunately the transaction wasn't near as smooth as had she used a reputable dealer... tis a long story that doesn't bear discussing, but this question is just to ease my mind about the camera she now owns...
When I set it up for her, we decided to only shoot RAW... We used a brand new SD card (opened the sealed OEM package)...granted, all I did was stick the card in and turned the camera on... did NOT format the card.
Anyway, the first image taken is numbered img_09993.cr2
All images since then have been continuous.... card formats (as expected) don't alter the numbering sequence....Now the question...
Should the first image on a brand new camera be the above number.... or has that camera been fired (multiple times)?... Seems the first image should have the number of something like img_00001.cr2
No, the first image is not always 0001. This is one of the biggest misconceptions. I personally had a number of cameras that were certifiably new and didn't start at 1.
