It is my opinion that the 5dIII + 500II is the package for BIFs. One can go 500 along for its ultra speed, for both AF and shutter. One can add 1.4x III and still a very nice balanced between reach and speed. Best of all, one can handhold it whole day without much trouble.
Now with the new firmware, one can add 2xIII to further extend its reach when necessary. It works very well, far beyond my expectation.
Yes, even without new firmware, 5d3 ( and 5d2) can AF with f4 lens and stacked 1.4x converstors. But there is no comparison here, for both AF speed and accuracy.
Here is an example from yesterday, first let's see the full frame
Another example. This time the bird is pretty far away and so it is a kind of extreme, but it has no problem nail it. Let's take a look at the full frame first
I currently have a 1D4 & a 7D...
I use a 300f2.8 is & have a 70-200IS II which are great lenses, I have also a 1.4TCIII & a 2X TCIII....
Shooting Aussie football on the wekend I was looking through images taken across the other side of the field of players, using the 2x @ 600 F5.6 I was amazed to be able to clearly read the tatoo on one players arm..>!!
Im thinking about adding a 5D3 for its FF & excellent AF abilities,...6FPS isnt so bad, Ive been dailing my 1D4 FPS speed on slow to 6FPS & am fine with that ..
Do you find the 5D# AF better than other dobies youve used >??

I don't have 1d4 nor 1dx, but compare to my other bodies, 7d, 5d2, 1d2 etc, 5d3's AF is significantly better, especially for tracking BIFs.It is just so much more consistent than others.

I'm saving for a new 300mm 2.8 II IS to get soon, and now you post these.
You are a horrible, horrible person
Great shots. I'm jealous
I was using 300/2.8 LIS for at least five years extensively and I love it.
Before the firmware upgrade, I did try 5d3 + 300/2.8 + 2x II + Kenko 1.4x stacked and it can focus with respectable image quality. With 2x only, it will do wonder, even though previous firmware already done so.
