Is it true that Canon is going to release an upgrade to the 10D as well as an "EOS 3" or something in-between the new 10D and the 1D Mark II?

The 10D is discontinued, and something new is in the works. No one knows the stats for sure, but our rep at the shop is saying a 9MP update to the 10D. We've also been told that the 550 and 420 flashes are also history. They were hinting a new line of flashes EX II or something...... Is it true? Who knows. It sounds odd that canon would ditch their current flashes after coming out with only one ETTL 2 body.... Only time will tell.

Well, new flashs wouldn't be surprising.

The 550EX has been the item where most Canon users could find some faults and one of a very few areas where Nikon is clearly superior . The 550EX quality doesn't match with things like a 1D MKII and a 24-70f2.8L doesn't it ? And don't get me started on the battery compartment. I wanted to upgrade from the 420 to the 550 but why pay more for the same poor plastic build

It would be a good move to try to make it right for them for sure, don't you think?

They have to introduce them sometime, and they usually do this kind of thing with the introduction of the prosumer bodies.

Let's hope the new 550 is a Canon branded Metz-style functionality, with dare I say it, auto-thyristor, as well as a built-in little 'kicker' secondary flash .....

... surely those execs in Japan are tired of selling all of those 54mz-3/4's!

I seriously doubt that a new flash would use an SCR (thyristor) to control the flash tube. IGBTs have been used for years because they can be turned on an off rapidly (~10-50KHz), allowing strobo-flash, pre-exposure flash metering, and remote flash triggering and control. (An SCR in a flash is often switched off by dumping a negative charge across the device, though some may use GTO.) The Nikon SB-25 was one of the first of the flashes to use IGBTs around 1992; I don't know about Canon.

Let's see, you're asking if a rumor is true?? If it was, would it still be a rumor? Perhaps The Shadow knows?

I've heard this a few times. Where do you see that it's discontinued? Seems to be in stock in all places, and not 'archived' on Canon's site, although it is heavily discounted.

The 10D is discontinued, and something new is in the works.

A salesman at Curcuit City told me the 10D was discontinued last Summer and replaced with the Digital Rebel, a much better camera. Last Winter a Ritz saleman told me they were unabled to stock the 10D because it was discontinued... Well, I'm sure it's day will come. However, this many fabled "3D" or "20D" may simply be a new model to fill the gap between the 10D and 1D MKII.

Haha, the salesman at circuit city told me that I should replace my 10D with a "larger megapixel" Pro-1.

Discontinued is misleading. The 10D is out of production (and its replacement is in production). But there are still supplies in the distributor pipeline and on dealers' shelves.

Well, this is one reason why I'd never buy a camera from Circuit City... I don't know how they think the Rebel is a better camera than the 10D. While I don't own either (yet... I have just ordered a 10D), I have read the manuals for both cameras. The 10D is head and shoulders above the DRebel in its features and functionality.

Oh like Best Buy is better... Actually, I work for CC and will admit that most salespeople are dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to the things they sell(flame suit on!). I had a hard time convincing that the 1D was better than any camera we carry. Everyone is so into "pixels-peeping" that they don't really care about the other features. It's always bigger(more megapixels) but not neccesary better(image quality) digicams.

I have a mate who has seen the NDA signed by his work place. If you would like to start placing bets on 8 mp 20d you are going to be laughing all the way to the bank.
It was always an obvious step up really .

My combo of EOS-D2000 and MZ-4 has been so satisfactory, it'll take a 5MP+, 5fps+, 3sec-buffer+ camera with a hell of a Canon flash to get me to switch. The camera is getting some really good pics, and its still way ahead of me. The ability for it to **correctly** focus with a 20mm 1.8 on in stone-darkness with no flash and get good pics is just wow in my book.

To Canon, I'll say it again: My D2000 seamlessly switches between card 1 and card 2, which assumes it has two slots...why not put two (CF's) on current cams?

I was offloading images from a 1G card (holds 448 pics) onto a laptop, and a horse acted up, and I still had my cruddy old 64Mb card in, but, I got the shot (the horse-rearing one I've posted here before).

Gotta have two slots, plus the SD if they want to use that for 11.b.
