As you know, however, this is probably a one-off racing sedan built for the show (turbo engine in the rear), so that big gap is either for brake venting or simply radical styling. But it IS on purpose.
The pink on red is something else, entirely. This was some 25 years ago, and although Japan was a highly educated, technically oriented and accomplished nation, they were still trying to copy and learn- from the west- a number of "social" things, i.e. clothing styles. Other examples:
Until the 1980s you almost never saw skirts or dresses that short.
Until the 1960s the average Japanese didn't own or drive a car. I was there when the whole country was learning to drive for the first time.
It was fun to watch, and not a bit scary. Because of the Japanese custom of being very polite to everyone, there was no aggression on the streets. No honking, no nothing.
Except everyone gesturing for the other driver to go ahead: "After you." "No, I insist, after YOU."
Fun to watch. But very slow to actually get anywhere .
