Try the Nikon store on the internet, Cameta, Calumet. There may be a few more. When I was looking, they were always out of stock. I bought a used D 300s instead.

The D700 has been out of production for a while. It also has not been available new for some time. (Unlike, say, the D90.) Where would these Nikon refurb D700 that you are looking for going to come from? Are they worth the wait?
If I were you (and I am not), I would get a "like-new" used copy from a source I trust. And if I am really paranoid, I will buy it from a dealer that offers warranty and/or extended warranty.

Must if be a refurb or will a low mileage used one do for you?
+1
tm, you may want to check the Buy & Sell board here on FM and find the machine you're looking for from a seller with FM history and multiple "Great" feedback ratings. For example:
I hope I'm not violating any rules by posting that link - I have no relationship with Rob but he has a couple hundred posts over 7 years here, 3 solid feedbacks and a good price on a low mileage D700. A member like that is unlikely to risk his FM reputation with any misinformation.
If I was in the market for a 700 I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him.

That's just $150 less than a refurb D800.
Nikon clearly senses the demand and maintains the high price to its retailers. One might extrapolate that for some users, neither the D600 or the 800 variants are true successors to the D700.

That's because they aren't...

You wonder where Nikon goes from here. A D4X with 56MP? A D750 with the D4's sensor? Or surprises everyone with a non-Bayer FF 18-24 MP sensor in a robust body like the D700 had. This would satisfy the unmet need.

I'd be more than content with the sensor found in the D600 but I want it in a more substantial body. Until the replacement that works for me arrives, I'll continue enjoying the D700 which is a great prosumer camera. I'm not at all confident that Nikon will give me what I want and so, like OP, I'm contemplating finding a low mileage D700 just to have a backup. But honestly, I don't shoot enough to justify that... 50,000 in three years hardly makes me a power user...

I have a Nikon D700 available if you're still in need. I don't have box, but it includes body, cap, battery and charger. Overall condition is good except the grip is starting to come unglued. The shutter is about 145k. The camera work very well. I am asking for $1020 shipped. Let me know if you're interested.
