I do not think there will be any big difference between the two both have IPS LCD panels and a resolution around 100 DPI. Dell has two 30" ultra sharp LCD's one is LED back-lit and I have read it shows more back light bleed then the cheaper none LED display. So if you like Dell more then Apple go with the non LED version.

ACD is glossy, Ultrasharp is matte. Much prefer matte displays for editing and to a lesser extent for general viewing.
US is also wide gamut while I'm pretty sure ACD is sRGB.
Thunderbolt vs every other display input.
For my purposes, wide gamut and matte are pretty much spot on for me, so I would choose the Ultrasharp. I actually have an NEC. Thunderbolt is pretty useless to me since I have USB 3.0 for my Mac Pro and I use DVI-D from my Mac Pro video card. Pretty much a no brainer for me at least.
That link specs do not seem to be correct Dell has two US 30" displays the one in the link is the $1400 U3011 link states its LED back lit. I do not think that is correct its the $1500 Dell's U3014 display that is LED back lit and I have read it has some LED bleed through. That the U3011 is a better choice. Both Dell's displays have a 100 DPI resolution display a 16:10 aspect ratio image with 2560 x 1600 pixels. The Apple displays a 16:9 aspect ratio image again 100 DPI fewer pixels 2560 by 1440. So the 16:10 displays an extra 2560x160 pixels on the bottom of the image over the apple. 400K more pixels.
Its always nice to have more pixels however most video cards do not support more then 2560x1600 pixels. That is one of the reasons the 22.2" high resolution 3840x2400 pixel display did not do well normal display adapters can not drive 9.2 MPixels displays. I would much rather have the old IBM display with it 204 DPI resolution then either the Dell or Apple display however my display adapter max pixels are 2560x1600. I'll take 22.2" high resolution over 27" and 30" low resolution displays. Its pixels not inches that adds space for editing....

I only saw the u3011 on Dells site, no mention of the u3014 monitor I'm leaning towards the Dell 30" and new 15" MacBook Pro 2.9GHz with 16GB memory and 768 Flash Storage

I just hooked up the Dell U3011 last week and this display is unreal!! It's attached it to a Radeon 2gb 7770 and the monitor was just callibrated yesterday with i1Display Pro. No bleeding, no dark areas, no hot pixels, nothing! It's hooked up using a DVI cable abd I've tested the DisplayPort output on the 7770 and found no difference.
This display looks great at brightness 20 and contrast 50. Gamma callibrated is 2.2 and luminace 119. BTW, 30" and 16:10 is a lot of monitor to look at.

I didn't see anyone else mention it so I will: be aware that most of the newish Dells (and other brands using matte IPS panels) use a pretty aggressive anti-glare coating (AGC). I had a 27" 2711U on my wish list for a long time and when I finally got one last year I couldn't stand to look at it for more than a few seconds at a time because of the coating. Needless to say I returned it.
It seems to be a pretty personal thing - some people don't even notice the anti-glare coating while others, like myself, are highly sensitive to it. I still feel matte is preferable to the glossy Apple displays. The end result is I love my 7 year old Dell 2405WFP. No noticeable anti-glare coating (unless you get really close and look really hard) and no reflections like the Apple displays. Of course it's not an IPS panel, but I feel those are a bit overrated anyway.

I read that the 3014 has a LED back light bleed problem that the 3011 is the better choice which I wrote in my other append. It does not seem to have a LED back light.

I agree and had them both side by side (Apple and Dell) and simply could not get past focusing on the matt finish of the screen of the Dell...Dell went back and I really enjoy the Apple...next may be the 30" NEC. WOuld be great if Apple brought back a 30..

We have a 27" iMac and a 27" Dell display. Both my wife and I prefer the Dell, mostly because of the matte finish. If I had to pick between the 27" ACD and the 30" Dell, I would choose the Dell every time.

I would take the 27" any day of the week.
At work I have 4 Ultrasharp 24's, I've had 2 replaced over the course of 3 years.
I've had some real longevity issues with the Dell monitors; when they send you a replacement, you get a crappy refurb; the one I got back under warranty still had adhesive gumming left from an asset tag/sticker.
Couldn't force me to buy a Dell monitor (notice, I have a gripe with just the monitors).
