One man's "portable" is another man's ball and chain:

What awful styling, I thought Canon was rather pedestrian but at least they're somewhat functional...

yeah but are you gonna shell out $6,000 extra for a heat sink for the 1DC over a 1DX which itself costs a lot more than this BM, just for the style of the box?

think of this: Canon charges more for the firmware tweaks and the heat sink (added onto the 1DX to turn it into 1 DC) than the entire BM 4k camera costs! (now the 1DX/1DC also have fancy high speed shutters for stills and so on so they are not the same, but i'm not comparing 1DX price, i'm comparing 1DC cost - 1DX cost!)

this is why some of us kept saying that canon was just worrying way too much about internal segmentation of all types and not enough about dominating this low cost, high quality mini-video field they got going

If you like that one, how about one you can slip into your pocket, attach PL mount lenses and costs less than a grand?

Well sometimes large companies like Canon can be their own worst enemy, far worse than any kind of competition they have.

The thing is that a lot of people who buy cameras like this aren't necessarily hardcore users who have any real application in mind. They are doing it just as much to impress their friends or just have something to spend their money on. The cheaper your product gets, the more it starts to appeal to this lower end of the market where the 'look' and styling can make or break a sale.

If you also shoot stills too and don't want to have to lug two bodies around the DSLR Canons are still very nice though.

Yeah and 4K and global shutter opens up a lot of possibilities, 6-8MP frame grabs from video for example.

I'm afraid to look for the price of the lenses from the 2nd picture.
They look very dubious

The lens is the thing.

I'd be quite happy to wield my 500/4L IS with a body the size of my ELPH 310HS attached to it, if it could provide the performance of my 1DX.

"Dubious"? What do you mean?

But just for interest's sake, the Canon CN-E 14.5-60 T2.6 is going for $42,750.00 at B&H, and the Schneider-Kreuznach Cine-Xenar III 18mm/T2.2 rents for $415 per week at borrowlenses.com.

Probably, from the perspective, "it's dubious that I could afford one".

If the 1DC was within 20% of the price of the 1DX, I would have seriously given it some thought, even though I shoot very little video. But at its current price, and the lack of a RAW video codec option, no thanks. For what they are, these BM cameras sure do look appealing. I could see myself with the Pocket Cinema Camera...
