As the title says. I just got a Jobu Pro2 Gimbal head and was wondering if anyone uses a Gimbal for portraits? It may be a stupid question, but I'm trying to decide if I want to add another ball head also or just use the Gimbal for everything. Thoughts?
I used the Wimberley with long lenses for portraits of some species, but not humans. Normally shorter lenses are used on the humans to produce an optimal perspective.
For typical portrait lens lengths, is there some reason you're going for an extra-heavy-duty ballhead like the BH-55? Unless you're shooting portraits with heavy supertelephotos (for which the gimbal head probably would be your best choice), there are lots of smaller/lighter/cheaper (and perfectly good for focal lengths 200mm and under) ballheads, which might better complement your gimbal rig for the big lenses. For portraits, I'd prioritize a smaller/lighter more mobile rig that's easier to move/adjust to get the right viewpoints, more than the high stability useful for long lens work.
The only reason I would go with the BH-55 is I'd rather have the extra just in case I need it. Instead of getting into a situation where I wish I'd had that extra load capacity. And right now the heaviest set up I'm using is my 70-200 2.8 IS ii with a 2x extender iii with the 5D MK3 with grip. So not too heavy, but you never know what lenses I'll pick in the near future. I'm always up to suggestions and love learning, so if you guys think something would suit me better I have no problems trying anything out.
