Hi Charlie,
I saw somewhere they called this place with certain name, but I could not find the proper name Yes, Death Valley is a special place on earth.
It is a gullly that rises above Gower Gulch as seen from Zabriskie Point, looking a bit more than 90 degrees left of the famous "traditional" view. It might be the lower section of this gulch.

Dan,
I took a look at your posting on "folded earth of a gully" shot and did some search on Gower Gulch Loop at Death Valley. I am not exactly sure where that famous "traditional" view is but the shot I took was - after I went up the hill, I turned around and shot. This is about 180 degrees from the Manly peak, about 40 degrees away from the parking lot.

Yup, that sounds like exactly the spot I was thinking of. I have a bit of an ongoing project to photograph that gully in non-golden hour light, and I often shoot it from a spot partway up the walk to the main observation area.

Dan, this photo was also taken in non-golden hour light... include this photo for your project.
