Ok, what am I doing wrong? I shot raw, updated LR to 4.2. Used exiftool to convert my files. Lightroom will still not import the .NEF files. Is there something else I need to update??

Next time I will shoot RAW + .JPG.

Thanks!
Michelle

Lightroom 4.3 supports D5200. LR4.2 doesn't.

Wow! Just Wow.

That White Heron like bird proves you have excellent technique and the camera can keep up with you.

I was sold on the eyeball of the first picture. (What are the birds names please?)

Well done.

Am wondering about ACTUAL shooting experiences with regards to the buffer when shooting RAW.

How fast does it fill up?
How fast does the camera write to the card?
How long until you can shoot again?

I don't "machine gun" often but it's nice to know it's there when shooting BIF or a fishing Eagle sequence.

@Humanoid, Fantastic images! What's been your keeper rate for BIF compared to other bodies?

I'll be posting a review with video tests of this soon, but as far as I know from other people's experiences, the faster the card, the better.

The buffer is 6 frames of 14-bit RAW. My impressions thus far are, with the latest Sandisk Extreme Pro 32gb cards:

- ~3 seconds to completely flush a full buffer of 14 bit files, from the time the camera stops shooting to the time the green light goes out
- Unlike the D600, it does not take twice the amount of time to flush the buffer when using Backup mode
- Once the buffer fills, I get about 2-2.5 FPS on 14 bit files.
- 3 FPS seems to be sustainable for 12-bit files (i.e. never fill the buffer)

I haven't found it to be an issue thus far, but I have always typically kept my cameras in a 3 FPS "Continuous Low" mode.

Thanks TheSuede - it's working and not a big deal to hack the files. Yay.

A few samples from the yard. Seems to be a great body for the 70-200/4. I don't think any MA will be needed. AF was snappy and CAF worked great.

The only AF issue I had was with the white bird - the camera would lock focus onto the blue edge of the water basin, even with center point focus. I had a bunch of misses because of that.

I am not crazy about the color balancing, feels like several of my images have either too blue of a cast, or too orange. I will shoot my X-Rite and get some better profiles today. I did not have any issues with blown highlights, some photos had hot whites, but the detail was still there for processing in the RAW files. Not sure if that would be the case with the .jpg engine?

Otherwise, it's looking very good and I like it alot with this lens.

This was with multipoint focus, so not perfect focus on the eyes...

Center point nails it. Bokeh is nice.

http://www.redwrench.com/2013/7100/20130319-_DSC0041.jpg

Managed to hook focus on the orange beak.

http://www.redwrench.com/2013/7100/20130319-_DSC0075.jpg

And a sample with lots of whites. Tried to get them clean and bright but not clipped.

They look great. When you are looking for a place to lock focus, its not so much about the colors of something, as it is the contrast between two or more things. I.e. if you place the focus rectangle over the black eye, against the white feathers, it should lock no problem.

Thanks David, I was trying to catch the eye or the edge of the beak. I know some of it is a factor of squiggly duck playing in water and me possibly being slow to follow, but I was suprised it would jump quite so far off the center point on some of the shots. It seemed to really like the horizontal blue line. I have noticed D600 do this sometimes, too (on a stationary target with strong lines, it will occasionally focus on a background element). I'd post a sample, but I've deleted the OOF photos from disk & formatted my card. All cleaned up and ready to go shoot again.

My 7D wasn't great with the white duck, either, so it's not a big issue, just something of note. Focus on dirty white duck is fine, though.

It looks like 2013 will be a year of triumph for DX, and hopefully Nikon's got QA guys back in the house.

I shoot mostly sports in jpeg now so was really curious how the D7100 would do in lower light. This afternoon I shot some stuff around the house that was mostly in shadows with a used Nikon 17-55 2.8 that I just received today (so have not checked if it needs MA yet).

Tonight I am headed to my daughters soccer practice under some bad HS lights and will see how it does with my Nikon 300 2.8 AFS MK II.

thanks for all of the high iso shots. very interested to hear how the focus performs tonight. i may take the plunge and try this camera for dance recitals, etc.

btw, not sure what else you shoot, but how loud is the shutter slap?
