Sounds like the D600 trounces it in IQ in every way.

Why do you want this to be true? Between this and the other thread, you want to boil down a lot of variables to a simple statement.

It's not reality. The D600 will perform better in some cases, yes. It's got larger pixels, it's $800 more and requires all FF glass. This shouldn't shock you. On the flip side, the D600 doesn't even play in the same league in terms of pixel density, so depending on your subject, the D7100 may provide you a whole lot more detail if you can't get close (e.g. wildlife).

Stop looking for blanket conclusions to complex questions. Also, the D7100 autofocus walks all over the D600, so where does your image quality go when you misfocus?

I may try shooting some little birds in flight today if I get time.

If you look at the specs the D7100 autofocus has to be better.
However, so far, I have not found it to be faster or more accurate than the D600.
And I still have not dialed in the White Balance which I am beginning to think is defective on my sample.
If I can finish my chores, maybe I can go outside in the daylight for another test today.

Interesting, I have been comparing it with my coworker's D600 and I've found it to be distinctly faster. Not quite the night-and-day from my D300, which I attribute to the D600 also having the more sensitive -2 EV & f/8 capable AF points, but at least on my 300mm f/4 & 200-400 f/4, it's better.

Haven't tried any focus tracking with the D600, so I can't speak to that.

And, I have not gotten outside with my D7100 yet.
I only compared it in low indoor light Video and worst case seranado indoor Stills so far.
Today, I may be able to shoot outside to shoot little birds in flight,
but I doubt it as my wife just piled more chores on me.
Punishment for my NAS?

I had a discussion with a Rabbi, Seven Day Adventist, Priest, and Protestent Minister.
They all had their idea of what day was the Sabbath,
but were very surprised when I suggested Monday.
That is because it is the day when the lease amount of work actually gets done!

Shot 1000+ frames of soccer this weekend on my 300 2.8 AFS MK II. AF seems a lot more accurate and faster than my old D7000 - very few out of focus shots. Shot some with the 1.3 crop mode as well and could not tell any difference in quality of output, though I have not done much pixel peeping on those.

Did run into buffer limitations a couple of times, something I rarely did with the D7000. With the AF locking onto everything though it was easy to do a bit more "spraying" than I did with my D7000.

All in all after just a weekend with the D7100 I am very happy with the upgrade over my D7000, as minimal as it might be. Shooting mostly sports and some wildlife the better AF system and the 1.3 crop mode are exactly what I want, while the buffer limit is not a deal breaker for my type of shooting right now. Want to try out the 1.3 crop with 1.4 and 1.7 TCs on the 300 2.8 this weekend to see how that combo works - if the AF keeps up to speed and IQ is still good, well that will be icing on the cake for me.

I have yet to try mine with sports, but will have a tough choice on what focus mode works best for things like soccer and football. Do I use all 51-points? AF-A or AF-C? 51-point 3D or without?

Did you experiment and find settings that worked best?

I really didn't experiment much but probably should now that you mention it. I always use AF-C and no 3D tracking. I shot with 11 points only but should try 51 I suppose. I am purely an amateur though and just used settings suggested to me for the D7000 in the past, but they seem to work for soccer and football.

I did a little BIF this weekend with the 70-200 f4 + 1.4X (waiting for the 80-400 to show up) on both the D600 and the new 7100. Better accuracy and more keepers on the D7100. I'm convinced. The crop was obviously helping the results as well. A larger image of the bird is generally going to be sharper even if the AF systems are equal.

Good video here by Scott Kelby on the D7100 and new 80-400:

My apologies if this has been posted here already - scanned through the thread again but didn't see it.

Someone on dpreview calculated the D7100's burst and sustain rate on a Sandisk 95 MB/s card by measuring the interval in shutter sounds. He also compared the D7100 to the D7000, along with the D7100's 1.3x crop mode:

Great video from Scott Kelby.... Makes me think twice about the 80-400 too.... although when I bought my 200-400 it was a toss up between the two, and I decided go big or go home.

Here are a few results from the D7100 and 600mm VR after using Dot-Tune by Snapsy. I was a +1.5 and used a +2 and results are below.

Got mine yesterday, and gotta say, I'm completely smitten with the colors out of this camera. So much more natural than the D7000 (which I previously had), and leaves the D90 (also previously) in the dust. The AF is definitely more sensitive in very low light, though don't expect miracles.

The highlights you can pull back are even greater than the D7000's. Skies that are completely blown out can be brought back, and everything is smooth until you start pulling so much it turns whites into gray. The shadows are also recoverable within reason (haven't experienced banding yet). Great for single shot HDR.

Also, shooting in 12-bit compressed for dealing with the buffer. The D7000 showed an extremely small difference between 12-bit compressed and 14-bit lossless, with just slightly different chroma noise in pulled up shadows (actually chunkier in 14-bit lossless). Everything else was the same, even gradients were perfectly smooth in transition.

Oh yeah, and the sharpness. Good lord! If you're careful and shoot at low ISO, you can even use 100% crop if necessary! I've actually had a sharpened JPG come out to be larger in file size than a RAW file!
