Can you really tell anything from an internet photo? A lot depends on monitor calibration, etc. etc. I mostly talked about AF performance (exceeds expectations,) and did I mention how quiet the shutter is? great for weddings and wildlife.

Got mine, and the battery is charging. Looks like I'll have to get a stick on screen protector for the rear screen, since that clip-on plastic thingy doesn't appear to be in the package. Not that it's a huge loss, as those things got scratched up like crazy.

I think getting used to the buttons won't take long, but configuring the AE-Lock button as AF-On will take some getting used to... it's a bit more of a stretch for my thumb. Going to love the U1 and U2 configurations on the mode dial rather than hunting through the menus as on my D300s.

A couple of 100% crops from those shots I just posted. I don't know if it's the lens or the jpegs but the 800E files seemed a bit sharper to me at 100%. So far the AF in this camera feels like the D800 for sure.

I'm able to focus in pretty dark conditions. Much better performance than I got from the D300s.

Also, on my 70-200 VR1, my D300s autofocus would fail if the focus was way to one side or the other, and would restart if I got the focus somewhat close with the manual focus ring. Doesn't have the problem with the new camera. Pretty thrilled about that.

Hey binary visions, any chance you can take an ISO 100 raw that's underepxosed by 5 stops then bring up the exposure in post and see if the image has banding like the D5200 has? Something with both midtone and shadow detail would work best.

Snapsy:

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but here's an ISO 100 shot 5 stops underexposed pulled up in the Nikon converter (hopefully right because I've seldom used the Nikon SW before!) before and after.

I looked at it in an expanded view and I don't see any obvious banding.

No banding but there is moire. Something I haven't seen with my D800E.

Thanks rd4tile! It's hard to tell from those downsampled images but I think I see the D5200-type horizontal banding on the vertical surface of the left book shelf.

Forgot the initial "how dirty is my sensor test" - not bad, a couple of tiny spots, probably the cleanest one yet! We'll see if I get any D600 oil blobs in the near future.

If the exposure is pushed 5 stops you'd see banding throughout the whole pic if banding was an issue.

Banding, Noise, not as sharp as the 800E even without the filter. I'll pass.

100% crop showing some banding/moire? Is that bad for such a tortured exposure!

Banding, noise, and sharpness can be fixed in post. If anyone has both D800E and D7100, please post some side-by-side comparison shots for us. Thanks.

Thanks. It's not bad relative to Canon sensors but it is a modest step backwards from the Sony Exmor sensors in the D800/D7000/D5100/D90/D5000. Most probably wouldn't notice this level of banding and since it's horizontal and uniform it'll probably deband well in Dfine 2.0.

100% crop + a tortured exposure. You'd be closer to a real world situation if you were bringing out a shadow by 2 stops or so.

Just for banding reference, here's a D7000 image pushed the equivalent of 8 stops in the deepest shadows. There is some luminance NR but nothing that would affect/reduce the banding, for which there is very little.

D600 vs D7100 same exposure (or at least close)

Don't shoot the messenger, I didm't buy the D7100 to be a lowlight monster!
