p.1 #1 · Canon G1 X (G1X) Image Thread

I know it's not an SLR, but since this is a Canon forum, I'd figure people would search more on this forum for this camera and the alt forum. It's not your typical P&S. If I'm mistaken or another similar thread like this has been started my apologizes. I also their has to be more FM members with this camera. I'll be using camera as my main camera for my family vacation coming up with one of my DSLR as my back-up. I'll contribute an image to start this thread off....

I'm very happy with my G1X as a compact supplement to my DSLRs. Its IQ is nearly equal that of my 5Dc and 24-105 at the pixel level and way better than its predecessor G10. It doesn't get much respect on this forum, probably because it doesn't do action or have interchangeable lenses, but it is good enough that I feel confident using it when I have a telephoto or macro lens on the DSLR or when I just don't want to carry that much camera.

Jeff, glad you posted those images again here (saw them on PotN). I do hope more people like you post. All I know I was astonished at how much information an over exposed image still retained. I really haven't used a new sensor camera, my DSLR's are from circa 2006, so I was really surprised.

Thanks! But don't get your hopes up about more responses. The typical comments are that its slow, slower to focus, doesn't have interchangeable lenses, is as heavy as a brick, and is chunky looking. This only thing it can do is take great images. But who'd want that?

Don't get me wrong, its not perfect. But I get better images out of it than I do my 7D.

I love my G1X, it's an astonishing little camera, I feel the images are better than those from my 550D.

It's a rather quirky beast in some ways - the need to go into macro for headshots, the woeful lens cap arrangement (cured with the excellent add-on auto lens cap) and the badly placed video button

But it has some great features like being able to adjust the flash compensation just by holding down the flash button and being able to use proper EX flashguns. It's a very well thought out camera and yes, vastly better IQ than my previous G10, usable up to 1600 ISO with the G1X

Underrated little camera

It's good enough I'm almost glad my truck was broken into making me replace my G11.

With a good photographer behind, many cameras would produce great images. The thing is, how hard will you have to work to get them?

My personal opinion is that I will not buy a camera which I will not be happy to shoot with. Case in point, I recently tried NEX 5R and RX100. Could I get great images from them? Absolutely. Will any of them be my camera of choice? Absolutely not.

On the G1X I think it has a good concept for me. Better AF, bigger OVF and a faster lens in the G2X would send me running for the store. I actually like the large size idea.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

OK, almost a year since the last post. I own the Canon G1X and am contemplating selling it and buying the Mark 2 due in April. Any thoughts from the community regarding developments in focusing distance/speed, and/or write times?

Has anyone even used one yet? Even seen one close up?

Too early to know how much performance improvement has been made. The new version has some interesting design changes like the dual control rings around the lens. And the lens aperture itself. But we'll have to wait until someone has actually used it.

Good news for us G1X owners is that we already have a camera that will do 95% of what the new one will do and we can afford to wait. I know, I know, 24 mm wide, EVF, and close focus are huge but come on, how many images will these changes actually affect? Nearly two years with this camera and I'm still very happy. A major upgrade from my G10.

I agree, Jeff.

I'm loving the original.

It would be nice to get wider angle, faster lens, and better macro. All valuable improvements. But I can wait a while, just like I did with this one.

I purchased my G1X as a stop-gap measure when the hot shoe on my 20D ripped off and dropped my 580EX to the ground (thankfully w/o damage). Have been sitting on the side waiting to see if I'm going to continue w cropped sensor, go full frame or …

In the mean time, I've used the G1X to good effect though the focus speed and shot-to-shot times sometimes kill me. It's great for landscape and non-moving shots. I still use the 20D for daylight shots of my kid's soccer games. But I knew going in that would be the case.

Edward Castro: I like the rig!
Jeff Nolten: Is that sky OoC (maybe w/filter) or in post? Nice!

The image was taken with a polarizer filter and then processed from raw in Lightroom. I rarely shoot SOOC JPGS - only for stitch assist panoramas really. Critical features for my choosing the G series back in the day was the ability to shoot raw, take a polarizer and use an external flash.

Sigh. I thought this was a new thread. Saw Yakim's post and was massively confused.

Happy shooting,

I'll probably will get the G1X mkII, but not sure how long I'll wait. All around great improvements, can't wait to see the reviews.

Edward -- You mean you might not wait long? It looks like several really great improvements in the Mark II.

Here are a few from a couple days ago with the original I just got.

PP in LR5.3.

Let's say I was a travel photographer (I'm not, unfortunately) and I took the G1X with me as my recording device. All these photos would be acceptable quality for full page repro in a magazine like Sunset or something similar. Maybe decent two page spread. Very crisp with lots of details and good DR. That's really the make/break point to whether we have a quality camera in our hand, isn't it? And so convenient!
