Gary, I've told you before, that Rough-legged Hawk capture is the best I've seen of that species! I would have that large and hanging on my wall!
Thanks Kindly Scott! The pool of talent is mighty deep in this thread and I'm just playing in the shallow end, but I appreciate the comment.
BTW, my advice is to keep your 400VR for sports and pick up an 800VR -- then you can show us all how bird photography is done!

Great choice Grant. I love my 500VR....a couple of fav's of mine...one action capture, and one showing resolution/sharpness in good light...

Lol.......Gary, great advise! But I don't see the 800VR in my future.
Lance, those are really nice! maybe I just need to pick up a D800 to pair with the 400VR.
Grant, Thanks for starting this thread, I think it is just gonna cost me more money.
Threads with pictures taken with the 500 or 600 are always stunning. This thread is no exception. The pictures here are really fantastic. Unfortunately this lens is a little out of reach for me (at least that is what my wife says ). Perhaps I should just order one instead of a new kitchen.

There's not a single image in this thread that isn't fantastic, but I think Gary's hawk is the winner for me.
lol, not sure one can pick a favorite from all these shots.
what kinda sucks is I see these amazing pictures and have high expectations when I go out with my new lens this week. and then reality hits. it isn't the lens but the photographer.
if only i could buy a used photographer for a similar price.
Impressive group of images from everyone. I think Scott should sell me his 400 so that I can shoot baseball this spring and he could upgrade to something longer. By the way Scott, I am birding with the 300 that I bought from you.
Now, the shot isn't all that special, but consider this:
- this was shot with the TC14EII at f5.6 wide open, not stopped down, so the 500VR does take the TC14EII quite nicely provided you fine tune it (very important)
- 1/250 second SS hand held(!) so VR does work, and works well!
- 85% linear crop(!) -- still pretty sharp, though it might have been better if I used a tripod.
The 500VR is very capable, and not that hard to use.
