To the OP, have you actually run into any situations where you were limited by 5DIII DR? I am also a fan of the huge DR from NIkon/Sony sensors but 5DIII actually has very good DR as well, its just not as good as D600 or D800. I think at this point 5DIII is the most complete FF camera. I am personally considering a D600 but the reasons for that are price, size (I am looking for a small body), and to some extent lens choices (though it goes both ways, some lenses I prefer in Nikon, some in Canon). As much as it feels great to have the "best DR" in your hand, in practical terms it would be way down on my list of factors to consider.
I've only taken a few photos from the 5d as I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it or not. As of now, I've decided to go with the D600 + 35/85 combo. The D800 looks a bit intimidating for a noobie like me, so that'll be for another day. Thanks all!

Don't want to go off topic, but I want to point out that with Nikon, you can change the meter readout to read both ways. Can't remember which menu option it is, but it's in there... I remember b/c my D600 came inverted to what I was used to from my D7000.
See now I gotta go dig through my manual again. Missed that the first time through.

I'm sure you will enjoy that combination, its probably a wise choice since the 5D III is kinda overkill.
