Late to the party, but I feel the need to express an opinion.
The size of the image has as much to do with its impact as how it's cropped. The first is shown larger than the second here, ( a subconscious pick on your part?).
I think if the second one was a little larger than the first, making the staring man roughly the same size in both images, I think it would have nearly the same intensity.
Thank you all for your thoughts - my third year (I think) of observing Rugby, I think I am beginning to understand the finer points of the game although there are still parts that escape me.
@mrchile, you present an interesting observation re size of images - I always chop to 700 or 800 by something less for presentation on FM. Enlarging the second would, I agree, certainly change the viewer's perspective to engage more closely with the central player rather than the group - I must look into this further. Thank you for pointing that out!
