I wonder what new fandangled problems the new d7100 will bring to us Nikon fans. We have Old Oily D600, Left-eye Blind D800.... any guesses?

It is not a replacement for the D300 series. Look for the D400 in mid to late summer.

Good luck.

If Nikon made the D400, priced between $1799-$1999, pro build, amazing buffer rate, the best of the best PLUS a 'flagship' DX sensor...would you buy it? Knowing that the D800 is only $200 to $300 more.

IMO, it would be great if the D400 was made but now that the D7100 is out and running around, I'm sure the D7100 is going to be one VERY great performer and if the D400 did come out, it'll be mainly for the 'pro-sumer' crowd just because of the price difference. I believe on Nikon's part, it's not necessary to make the D400

I'd buy a few. When you spend 10K+ for a long reach tele lens then you would rather spend $1800 for a fine camera than $1200 for a cheapo. Even if you have a 600, there are often times when smaller species are not close enough for FX. Maybe it would be different if or when there is an FX body that crops to DX at 8FPS+ and retains 20MP. I'm not holding my breath.

The solution might be the D800(E). In DX mode with the grip, it does 6 fps and the buffer will hold 30 images. I see that they go for between $2 and 2,500 now. The bonus is of course that it's a 36MP camera. I'll have to consider that.

Another option is a used D3X. Cropped files are of course smaller, but the camera is made from a single piece of granite and nice ones are available for just over $3,000.

I think they mean to say lack of AF ON button on the back of the D7100, instead of AF Mode. This is the same as D7000 and D600. You can reassign the AE-L/AF-L button to be AF ON but then you lose half shutter AF, which is not the case with D300/D700.

I am beginning to finally accept the fact that Nikon has no interest in continuing the excellent handling Dxxx class of cameras. Many will say there are no difference and simply rely on specs. But the distinction b/t a dxxx class of camera is its build, ergonomics and thoughtful placements functionality that allow a photographer to get the job done. In the same way a 7d is over a 60d in Canon-land.

I guess for the newbies that never had a chance to use the dxxx cameras - you don't miss what you never experienced.

I still have my D200. There is no reason to sell it since resale is so low. I have also used a D300. I admit that I never use the AF-On function. And I no longer have studio strobes that require the multi-pin connector. I can see some people needing those functions. Other than that, there is nothing in the handling and control layout of the D200/D300 that I prefer over my D7000. And the images out of the D7000 are clearly superior.

I admit that I would like to see a larger/faster buffer in the D7100 but remember, it is now handling a lot more information than it did in the D7000. I see the D7.1K as being a pretty amazing value. I am excited to see more.

I am surprised they are so few D7100 sample images available as compared to when the D800 was announced. I am thinking that perhaps they were very hesitant to let folks test it out in order to avoid word leaking and affect D600 sales?

Nah. D700 and D3s didn't see the same amount of problems. Quite sure we had interweb back then.

Google banding and D700. I remember that complaint which is normally reserved for Canon's lineup.
