The higher-resolution sensor provides a number of benefits, but by far the coolest is the camera’s 1.3x crop mode. Effectively a 2x crop versus a full-frame sensor, the 15.4-megapixel 1.3x mode provides the user with a big bump in telephoto reach. Its outline also hugs the perimeter of the 51-point autofocus layout, giving the D7100 edge-to-edge tracking AF. Finally, the crop mode bumps shot-to-shot speeds from 6 frames per second to 7, with a 100-shot buffer and a 1/8000th of a second maximum shutter speed. Sounds like a sports photographer’s best friend.
I've finally found my next travel camera and D4 backup. $1473 is what I get if I convert the yen to dollars. I wonder if the US price will be close to this.
Hmmm ... I still see room in the line-up for a D400. The D7100 is nice but lacks a 10-pin connector, the higher FPS, a decent buffer, and I did not see mention of a battery grip.

OK, found the battery grip and it's not 5 FPS but 7 which is more to my liking ... the only things then are the lack of a 10-pin and the small buffer.
The butter is the most annoying part ... only 9 frames .... I like to be able to shoot for 3 seconds in burst mode when doing sports and at 24MP I see that buffer filling in 1.5 seconds.

Oh wait, the 7 FPS is in the "crop" mode, otherwise 6 FPS which matches my D300 ... OK, I guess ... and the crop mode drops the image to 14MP if I did the math correctly so the 9 frame buffer becomes 15.5 frames which would yield 2 second buffer or about a 3 second burst when you consider write times ... this may work ... but now my focal lengths are even longer and DOF deeper ... not a fan of that.
I'll hold out for a D400 at 16MP DX with 8FPS. Beside, it will be next year before I can buy something anyway.
Hmmm. If I can connect a radio trigger to it (to fire camera from long distance,) this will work for me. At $1,200 the price is certainly right too! Maybe Nikon has regained some momentum again? I await some user reviews from "regular" guys. I might get $400 for my D300 and $500 for D5100 (after taking 18-55mm VR lens off D5200 and putting it on D5100.) New D5200 (minus lens) maybe $750 plus new D7200 body for $1,200 plus spare battery or two comes to $2,000. subtract $800 for current cameras....$1,200. I can do that. No more buying $3,000 antique French lenses for awhile though. I still think there is some chance for a d400 yet. It just got slimmer, though.
Was somewhat rhetorical. I have been looking to upgrade from my D7000 because I am not all that happy with the AF, and was thinking the D800 would be better - but with the D7100 offering a similar AF system as well as other cool features for sports, I think this is a no brainer for me - especially at a pretty good price point.
