I promised myself I would just enjoy this thread (no offense intended to the OP...I have been through situations like yours, I totally understand how having that lens sitting in a box on your house is like...well...a really bad feeling), but that post is like somebody screaming for therapy.
I truly hope everyone involved comes out better, including Mr. Rogalsky. He certainly looks like he needs the help.

as Sartre wrote, "Hell is other people"
A few years ago, France's National Library airbrushed Jean-Paul Sartre's Gauloise out of a poster of the chain-smoking philosopher. Supposedly this action was to comply with a French anti-smoking law. But it caused some consternation among some. To wit, one of the French newspapers opined "hell is other people removing your cigarette."

Um sorry pal. If I am out photographing in a public park/recreation area and a family approaches my vicinity, I immediately put my camera down from my face. I do not need accusations of pedophilia spoiling my day.

Sad.
I don't. I am here to record culture for posterity. Their fears do not make me a predator. Society needs to mature and see that we (normal men) are nothing to be feared. Hold your head high and continue your craft.
My wife and I are senior citizens and have travelled to over 100 countries, taking
hundreds of thousands of photos, including many of children. In Asia the parents
are invariably proud and happy to have their child photographed. Only in the
USA have we encountered hostile, paranoid parents obsessed with
fears of pedophilia.

Nonetheless, since I live in the USA (and now in the post Jerry Sandusky environment), I'd rather not take the chance of being carted off to jail for a misunderstanding. Too many subjects available in the world without inviting trouble from "paranoid" parents.

^ If your not guilty of anything why walk around in fear?
In today's day and age, unfortunate as it is, you better not take photos of children unless you are taking them at the direction and permission of their parents. I know it may seem paranoid to some but you must be living in a fantasy land if you don't realize how wrong this is nowadays. Sad, but true.

Good luck Dennis! So sorry it happened.
Let us all know how it turned out.

Can only speculate on what happened to this guy. He used to be here as a major contributor to the Nikon MF forum. He's got quite a thread currently running on RFF now, although I haven't been able to find it. Long, rambling posts, double and triple spaced I see that Fred has locked him outta here.

Dennis, any updates?
I agree. My camera is almost always attached to my side (or my eye ) but if I saw someone taking photographs of either of my nieces, I'd be sure to let them know that's about to become a very bad idea.

Very sorry about this episode Dennis. I don't know you but from what I've seen of your participation on FM you're one of the good guys. I wouldn't say I know Gregory well but for some months he was active on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread. Our paths crossed on Nikon Cafe as well. Yes, he is a bit self-absorbed, inclined to both dump photos in a post and indulge himself in rambling discourses about his experiences as a photographer. I sometimes thought he was under the influence as he wrote.
But what seems germane for this situation is the fact he is extremely casual in how he handles gear. He prides himself on being a "serious" photographer who uses his gear. Frankly, I'm not surprised that a lens he's used for over a year could be battered as you found. He often posted photos of gear and seeing it lying around his car available for quick access, I could only shake my head. I've no doubt that he would be capable of doing the damage evidenced by these photos in fourteen months. I agree with those saddened by the fact such a fine lens would be abused that way, especially a lens that is no longer in production. I'm also disappointed that Gregory would try to pass off this lens clearly in user condition as "mint." He no longer deserves the benefit of doubt I'd given him in the past. It is one thing to be self-absorbed and quite another to be running scams on FM.
Good luck Dennis. I expect your CC company will protect you. You were wise to use regular Paypal for this transaction.

Here's the RFF thread on which NikkorAIS features himself.
