GammyKnee, I LOVE your shot, too. (Except for that one hind leg that's chopped off at the paw; I'd take it out in Photoshop.)

I know! I have a version with it edited out but I found the original first

Thanks for all the great feedback, been away from the computer looking for wild dogs to photograph in MT.

I've been waiting for more ambient light outside to try faster shutter speeds, I was using ~1/1250s outside, which I knew wouldn't make for tack sharp images, but didn't seem they should be as soft as what I was getting. Lack of ambient light is why I went inside and tried with multiple flashes, using 1/250s ISO 200 to kill ambient light and let the flash freeze action ~1/4 power (not sure what the flash duration is for speedlites, but that should be pretty fast).

I'll experiment some more with all the techniques mentioned. I'm curious whether the best techniques differ between wide-angle and telephoto.

An aside, what do you guys use to host your bad photos to link to in posts like these? I just have a Flickr account and I don't want to a blurry puppy photo (however cute) to be at the top of my photo stream.

Thanks again for the insight.

I use my own website. I keep a "private" page on the site for photos that I might want to share with a more limited audience. It can't be navigated to by the general public from the rest of the website. I add and remove pictures from that page as needed and just send a direct link to those pictures to those in that limited audience with whom I might want to share those pictures.

In Flickr you can make photos private, but they still can be shared. Thus they won't show in your public photo stream.

I subscribe to the Upload and Sell service here at FM. The uploads are limited to small sizes, but they do for educational purposes, and the small yearly fee partially makes up for Fred's time and trouble in running this invalualbe site.
