True; I would never buy an EF-S lens only because I have a 7D. Instead I buy certain EF-S lenses because they are the best choice for the kind of shooting I do with a 7D.
The EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is one of those lenses.
I have tamron 17-50 non-vc and I would take it before any of the FF lenses listed here. FFs are not wide enough and they're much bigger. I think Canon 17-55 is too big and heavy and shabilly made for the money. Plus I believe (someone here pls correct if I'm wrong) it casts a shadow with a built-in flash at the widest setting. Tamron doesn't. It's small, sharp, focuses quickly (although louder) and it's less expensive. And comes with a hood!
If anything happened to my lens, the only one I think I would consider would the the sigma 17-50 OS.
I had pretty much the same choice to make. The ONLY reason I went 24-70L was because I was upgrading to full frame in the future. Otherwise 17-55mm is an easy winner for me
I voted for Tamron 17-50. Wide starts at 17-18 on crop imo. 15-85 noticably wider.
If i was spending that kind of money I would probably get the 10-22 or 11-16 Tok first, and use whats left for the more pedestrian focal lengths. There is probably no way im using $1000 if I don't have an uwa to show for it.
