Do you mean add copy?
Dude, I framed this so I can add copy, haha. So awesome that we're on the same wave-length! I'm using this as a mailer-promo to AD's and Art Buyers.
Nice to know my trade school education wasn't all for nought!

The tool explains why the clip is off the OLD blocks.
OTHO I didn't get the joke until I just typed that because I was so mentally focused on your question of whether the chisel should be in the shot and the chip that that what the blocks spelled didn't register.
How would I have reacted if you had instead just posted the shots and asked for reaction without the narrative? I'll never know for sure because that bell can't be unrung.
But jokes in general tend to be funnier when delivered with delayed punchline so intellectually I like the idea of the chisel because it delays the "Oh I get it!" moment of recognition. The joke is the same without the chisel, or if the blocks are seen and processed first but without the same clever element of timing.
Delayed "find the hidden meaning" timing is difficult to pull off in a photo because it relies on the viewer seeing the diversion first. You could play with that "what is seen first" dynamic by making the letters on the blocks gray and the handle of the chisel red and maybe put some red blood under the tip of chisel or chip.
Most viewers would for likely go to big red handle first, then pool of blood second and be so mentally focused on that apparent accident scene it will take much longer to wander over and notice the blocks that blend into the background and process the letters to form OLD.

You make an interesting case, Chuck. The chisel was the first photo, without was second.
My decision to use the chisel was exactly how you described your idea of the chisel. Funny that you mentioned a red handle. The handle actually is a beautiful transparent red, though it definitely dragged the viewers eyes right out of frame.
I didn't consider neutralizing the block letters, though that might work with the chisel. I don't see myself using the red handle, as it's too distracting for the scene.
With all that, I think there's immediacy, rather clarity without the chisel. Some will get the chisel, and I' love that, but from everyone who has seen it, on FM or in person, only a small few didn't question the chisel's role.
Has me worried that it won't be effective on a large scale.

Cool. The block/chip promo looks very classy.
I like the eggs/basket, too, although I don't exactly understand the need for the unbroken egg on the left. The way it has a little glow underneath it and how it's on an almost solid black table makes it look like it's almost floating to me.

+1 @ Add Copy = Lose Chisel
Diggin' the little detail of how the rotation of the "D" now has the corner pointing toward the copy and the slight arc of the blocks also frames/contains the viewer to the copy ... but I'm sure that was all just by accident. haha
+1 @ Dennis "floating egg"
Not being the GA guru ... I'm wanting to pull your name down "just a smidgeon" as it seems rather far away from where the action is. Watching you work is a "love/hate" relationship. I love seeing what/how you do ... I hate how much it makes me realize how little I know.

Thanks guys. The added rim light under the egg doesn't sit right with me, will be removed. These have been getting received well, I'm going to stand behind them and mail them.
Still, I really appreciate your reactions to them.

Great concept executed well.
I find the chisel-less image more puzzling, makes me work a bit harder and more effective in moving me to the message. It does feel a little empty, less balanced and visually less engaging. Still, I would go without the chisel.
