Very nice. Totally a sunrise shot! I can feel the new day warmth.
Odd that you are east of me and not Cali...
Thanks Craig! Yeah, it was a beautiful morning.
Ha ha... yeah, it's weird that I am to the east of you. But that's about to change, as I will be heading west tomorrow, so be ready to shoot sunset with me tomorrow.

I haven't figured out how to effectively process the sun star yet, and this makes me want to keep at it. I really like the right hand cloud making the rock look like a smokestack, but wish that it wasn't peaking out on the left side of the rock. Then again, you probably would've lost the nice light and sun star if you had waited.

Thanks so much Tim. Yeah, the clouds for some reason just wouldn't hold still for me!
As to the sun star, I prefer to shoot at f13 usually with my 16-35mm on the D800, but I did also take the same sun stars at f16 and f22 to make sure I got a nice sun star. I figured if diffraction became an issue at f22 it would be relegated to the background which I didn't need to be tack sharp anyway. But it turns out when I viewed them for processing the all 3 sun stars looked the same, so that way I could still go with the f13 version. I will post the 2 shots I blended later, maybe that will help out with your processing.

Dude... That's great! So many of you guys live in the best of places. I can't get shots like that around here. No mountains in Austin, Tx, just big hills. There are a few small "mountains" (barely) near Llano Tx. Anyway, I hope to get new shots soon, You and many others on this forum inspire me. I also recently bought two lenses, the Nikon 105mm f/2.5 AI-s manual focus & a 300mm f/4.5 AI-s lens. Plan to use them for astrophotography. The 105mm is an amazing portrait / landscape lens. Anyway I love your shot....
Todd
Have an iPhone? Check out this cool app if you do. It will tell you exactly where the sun, moon will rise & set.
Called "The photographers ephemeris" found on the app store.

Awe, thanks Todd! yeah, for as big as Texas is, it's a bit lacking on the grand landscape front. It sounds like you have gotten some cool new lenses to play with, that will make for some fun. I look forward to what you will be doing with them.

PS... TPE which you mentioned is an awesome program. I have been using it for years now. I started using it on the PC long before there was even an iPhone. But now I do have it on both my iphone and on my iPad Mini. It's a program that I constantly use as I am tracking moonsets and moonrise locations.

great composition Jim! looks like a great spot.
however, this feels like it has a bit too much of that muddy/hdr feel to it. not a fan of the single shot processing. the sky and clouds just dont look right. not sure if there is much to be done but that just my opinion
Hey Tyler, it's always great to hear everyones thoughts, so I appreciate it, even if you don't like it. Definitely there was no HDR involved.
