1. AI-Servo AF should at least be at the 5D3 level. This is a body specifically designed for action photography. Why would you cripple it with anything less then what Canon's mid level general use body has.
2. 10 FPS. Kind of a no brainer for a sports body.
3. 18MP 1.6x crop sensor with high ISO similar to the 1D4. That's probably about as realistic as you can hope for given the density of a 46MP FF equivalent sensor.
I'm thinking it will be in the $3000-$3500 range positioned to replace the 1D4. Could be an awesome companion body to a 1DX.

I like this—but hoping the $$ is less.
I have the same feeling. After almost a decade of constantly upgrading camera bodies and always wanting something more than the bodies I was using were providing, I've now been using my 7D for 3 1/2 years and my 1D Mark IV for over 3 years. In spite of the fact that posts on internet forums lead us to believe that can't possibly do without what the latest camera bodies provide, there is nothing that my photography requires, including AF capability, pixel count, high ISO capability, etc. that the two bodies that I'm using now don't give me. Until I see something in a new body that I need and that my current bodies don't give me, I won't have a "wish list" for a new body. And, as DSLR technology has reached a more mature state and as image quality improvements become more incremental, it may well be a couple more generations before I do feel that there is something in a new body that will actually make a meaningful difference in my photography.
I am actually OK with the 7D as is, too, except for its AF.
I am trying to lighten up my gear, and succeeded by selling the 1DIV and my 500, leaving me the 5DIII (which I really love) and a 300/2.8 II + converters.
I wish for just one more thing—a crop camera with the ability to AF as well as the 5DIII when I need the reach. It does not do the job very well on the lenses as I have them now. It is fine for static shots, but for action it is lacking and the 5DIII wipes it off the map. So it is either that, or go back to the longer, heavier lenses, which I really do not want to do.
So just one more, PLEASE! :-)
I'm happy with it except for two things.
Evaluative exposure is too biased towards what's under the focus point, I'd rather it just expose for what's on the frame and I can compensate for my subject's variance off the 18%.
A bit more DR so I can get rid of my grad filters.
Noise doesn't worry me, frame rate is ok, APS 1.6 crop is fine, AF at f8 would be nice so I can AF my 100-400 + 1.4x.
Great ISO perfomance.
8FPS in any light.
Even better AF(1D performance)
18MP is perfect for the 7D I think, could even go down and I would love it. I would like to stay APS-C not APS-H because of the extra crop it gives. Still an amazing camera as it is.
Who knows what Canon will do, but I'll take 24 mpx (at least as good as quality as we have now), either the 5D3 or 1D Af system so we have f8, and honestly that's it.

Cleaner low iso! Aps-h sensor!
Nothing wrong with low ISO
Sorry don't agree about the Aps h
ts a crop camera reach is its point
anyway I think its an amazing camera for the money a bargain in the UK at the mo
only thing I.would add is better dynamic range above ISO 1600 but actually when I'm that high the light is poor anyway
1.3 crop instead of 1.6. Sure the 1.6 is great but when you don't need the crop it's your worst enemy. It's pissed me off so much i'll never use it again and is why I bought a 5D2. The 7D was my backup for 1DMKII-N especially at night football games, high school and NCAA where the lights are still bad for that camera and with a 400 2.8 with the 7D it's very difficult to use.
Secondly, the noise on the 7D past 3200 is just useless to an extent since the sensor is so small and cramped with pixels. But that is just me.
1DX AF system, 10-12fps, etc. - these are all fantasy specs .
Let's hope that the 7DII will at least get a proper sensor upgrade.
Canon's sensor tech is up for renewal.
If we are lucky, the 7DII will get a brand new 18-20mp sensor.
It's not inconceivable that this sensor, if made on the new tech, will perform as the 1DIV/5DII.
5D3/1DX should hardly be a fantasy for the 7D2!
10fps might not be crazy either, although I wouldn't be shocked if it was 8 again either.
competition moves along

Guys (and gals) the specs of the 7D successor have already been set some time ago. It's nice day dreaming, but don't expect the new camera to be changed because of ideas in this thread. In general the final specifications of a new camera are being set about 7-8 months before production and marketing starts. Anyway, daydraiming can be EOSfun too. But too high expectations will lead to disappointment en disillusions.
1. so this means it is is CR3 and not CR1
2. it will be announced before end of 2013 is CR3
one would sure hope the 5D3 AF in it is not fantasy otherwise they may as well give up, 7 series is the fast APS-C cam with reach and AF
