p.2 #3 · Warning to those upgrading to WordPress 3.5
Hmmmm I am an affiliate marketer and have about 35+ websites built on Wordpress framework and have never run into this issue. All of my updates are automatic. It must have been a human error.

I upgraded wordpress once a couple years ago, and the whole site went up in flames. So yes, it happens.
(but I also had a backup!)
Something I have learned the hard way:
*Always* back things up before an upgrade - regardless of platform (web site, computer OS, etc.) You never know what might happen. Just because you had trouble-free upgrades in the past does not mean you will never have a catastrophic issue. (You have been warned. ;-))

After reading this thread when it first appeared I made sure that everything totally backed up before doing the upgrade...and then everything went perfectly smoothly for me. So no issue at my end.

I spoke too soon, I updated the base version of my theme (3rd party, not from WP) and my whole site was totally borked.
Sometimes, if it's not the WordPress update that gets you, it's the update to the 3rd party theme that has to be done after the WordPress update that gets you.

What is everyone doing for WordPress backups? It's trickier than backing up an ordinary HTML site (which is normally just a bunch of files in a single folder). Not even all the "backup applications" do it right.
What are people finding success with, what has failed?

I use 2 plugins that email me my database files and dumps all my site files to another folder on my server. I also do a manual backup once a month. I login to my cpanel and copy the entire site folder to my HDD at home. I have never had an issue upgrading wordpress. When I did have 3 issues, it was either theme or plugin related. So when you run in to issues, disable all plugins and update your current theme and see if that fixes it. most times it does.

Wow.... looks like I am not alone. Looking around on the interwebs seem to show upgrading WP has a fair share of website being nuked.
Anyhow just a quick update. The rebuilding of the new site is pretty much done. However as I discovered that older blog entries were all corrupted. The images wouldn't show up. It might be a db issue. Nonetheless, now I have to spend some time to upload old pictures back onto the blog entries.

And now we have themes based on themes with a 'base' theme and customised one on top. Two to upgrade and even more chance of some disaster.
