Not me, can't afford it. I have already spent $ 9k on photo equipment in the last month I'm glad if I have money enough for two noodle soups per day here........
I'm so poor I now have to curl in the lens hood of the 600 II each night for shelter.

Stu, my recommendation to you stands. If you want top notch performance and ease of use, 500 II is a great choice. Also, the 500 MkI is still a great lens, just a bit on the heavy side.
If you want the ultimate supertelephoto lens at the expense of some additional weight and bulk, then 400 f/2.8 IS MkII is it. The lens also makes fine 560mm f/4 and very good 800mm f/5.6 with the MkIII TCs.
Peter, I know you're making sense, but the 200-400 just tugs on my little boy sense of fun My Nikon shooting mate with a D4 and 500 VR also keep telling me the 500 ii is my best option. Although a 400 ii on the 1D4 might be more useful than a 500 ii on a 1DX...Come April, if the finances are ready then I'll make a firm decision. Judging by the overwhelming lack of enthusiasm I've seen on various blogs and fourms, if Canon do release the 200-400 at very high price it may well be a big white flop. I'm sure we'll know more within the next couple of months
FWIW....yes there were 6 copies at the Tennis here, but I was told by CPS locally that the release date is still not announced and has been put back until at least mid year or later.
At this stage the lens is only officially announced as an "intention to build", with no official release date or production model finalised.
I was also told, the price looks like going even higher now.....was expected to be $13999, but that could be raised quite a bit

Yes, that would ensure the lens becomes a smashing commercial success for Canon.

I wonder if someone from Canon could come on here and tell us why this would even cost up $10k, let alone $13.k +. They must be thinking the built in extender makes the lens worth double what we think it's worth I suspect the price would freefall 40% within a year once canon have filled their shelves with unsold lenses. For those who really want one of these it's a waiting game...
I get the feeling that Canon is producing this as a status symbol and may not even care about sales or ROI. None of their top end super teles are high volume items anyways. They know there will always be a certain set of people that will buy it at any price simply to have the most expensive Canon lens not to mention the higher end sports/wildlife community who will inevitably want it. It's all stratospheric pricing to me but I don't doubt that there will be buyers at $14K+.
Your one hope is that the dollar has come back a little bit against the yen as the Bank of Japan has eased supply.

Throw in a generous discount of 27% because the 400 is a DO not really an L and the 500 focal length on the 200-400 uses the extender is 560 and not F4. Price it at $13999.
See the deal we are getting. Instead of buying 4 lenses we can get just 1

Ah... Thanks for clarifying, now it makes much more sense! I tell you what if Canon are designing and building this lens "just because they can" and charging a small fortune, they can bl**dy well sit around twiddling the zoom ring and flicking the extender switch themselves
