the $600 estimate sounds about right. I spent around the same for Nikon to repair my dropped 400/2.8 VR. The dent was still in the front when it came back, even though the lens worked perfectly. I called them 3 times to make sure then repaired ALL cosmetic damage, but somehow the message never got thru...

I'm not surprised the people bending over for insurance companies also get their stuff stolen all the time.
Are you serious?
Yes, "all the time" I get my stuff stolen. It wasn't because there was a rash of break-ins in my community from people searching for guns. Nope. It's because I'm insured and either schemed it or lied to my insurance company about it.
Bummer on the drop, that's how I became a customer of APS, dropping a lens that wasn't mine (ouch)

Dear all,
Help~!!!!!!!!!
My Nikon 500mm f4 VRII fell from a tripod. 1) Got dent on the front ring, but not so much. 2) Autofocus does not work well. Motor makes noise but not work. Others are just good. I am wondering any suggestions to repair it? How much I will pay for it? It's a US lens. I live in Pittsburgh. Thanks.

It happens more often than I want to hear about insurance claims. Just in the last few years, 2 of my neigbors got their houses burnt down, while they were on a cruise. Just that after they couldn't sell after a year or so on the market.
The lesson: if you some how can "insure" yourself, do it. The regular comercial insurances are artificially expensive because of the abuses, such as in these examples.
