Just to give a minority report here, have you considered a used 16-35mm f/2.8L first version? The 10-22 is indeed a nice lens, but I prefer the 16-35. I've shot with both. There are valid criticisms of the 16-35mm particularly softness in the corners at the widest end. Still I have taken a number of superb photos with it. I think a used 16-35 used is cheaper than a 10-22mm new.
A big advantage of the 16-35 is it works on all cameras, not just APS-C.

There's a big difference between 10mm and 16mm on a crop sensor though.
When I use my 10-22 9 times out of 10 it's at 10mm. I do see your future proofing point but buying but used and look after the glass and it will retain it's value!
Thanks for all of the responses! This is really helpful. To answer some questions that were asked and which i did not mention...I have a Rebel XSi, would like to shoot Full Frame, and am looking into second hand lenses. Dont really have the finance to buy anything brand new right now. I am in the experimental stage and want to take really good photos of architecture or anything in general for myself...hopefully in the long run i can start doing a little freelance photography as a side job once i get more comfortable.
Once again, Thanks for the responses and if there are any other suggestions...please do let me know.
I would add that Roger Cicala describes all the major UWA contenders at any of the UWA selections on lensrentals.com. Just select any of the UWAs mentioned and you'll get a quick comparison of that one and several of the others.
And just for grins you might check out his used equipment list -- he might have what you want.

Canon 10-22 is the best but if you go full frame it won't fit
