Well apparently not an uncommon problem. Ten pin connector on the camera became dislodged or broken when attaching the remote release. The connector is no longer centered and moves around.

Couple questions: Anyone having gone through this; is it simply the connector coming out of its seat or is it more like a piece broke (boy a detailed schematic sure would be handy). If it's just out of its seat it is tempting to open the body and put it back, being the hard headed do-it-yourselfer type.

Now for the painful part. How much and how long will the fix be ? (sending back to Nikon Service East).
Is it a warranty item or will they consider me a klutz and therefore it's on my dime (eventhough it seems to happen to a fair number of others).

TIA

If warranty, I'd send it in to Nikon.

That's a bummer, feel or you brother.

I just got a new d800, and this tells me to be gentle with that connector.

That's what we wanted to hear

The break occurred when trying to twist / screw to tighten a MC-30 release. My advice: Be very gentle with that connector. If you don't need to screw onto the connector, all the better.

I've had the same problem and they replaced the first camera, my second one I've owned since October 15 th I'm not sure what's going to happen this time around I'll have to wait until the New Year. I owned a D 300 from the time they came out and never had a problem so I'm not happy with this.

Thats pretty crazy.

I've used this port on my D700 tons of times since I got it way back when it was released and never had a problem.

I found out last week that I have the same problem on my 6 month old D800. It was the first time I tried to use the 10 pin connector.

It is going to Nikon Canada tomorrow.

ugh...

The more I hear, the more sad it makes me. They take photography handling away in favor of video, all the sensor and screen cast issues and now this.

I think the vast majority of D800/D800e's perform fine for their owners, but I have to say I'm disappointed. I wonder how much of it has to do with disruption/distraction from the disaster at Fukushima, but sheesh...
