yes the D3s can see in the dark just a hair better but in the end it what is delivered as a whole. the D4 has a better overall result. dynamic range is better by a bit too (1EV). the AF is a tad faster and delivers a bit more consistency. you can't just use one parameter. the tool is the sum of its parts and how they work together. the D4 delivers just that much more overall usable high quality data.

I'm still using the D3s, my D800 is no match for it at truly low light shots at high ISO... I just didn't see enough of an upgrade to replace the D3s with the D4, I'm waiting to see what the D4s does....

Upgrading for improved high ISO performance is NO reason to upgrade your D3s. There are numerous small improvements that might cause a person to upgrade. I always try to keep the ISO under 6400, even when shooting the D3s.

I shoot the D3s, D4 and D800e (D3 before that) for low light dance. The D3s and D4 seem very similiar in Hi ISO (especially if you resize the 16 Mp D4 files down to 12Mp). However, the D4 has substantial control improvements, 10fps and an, industry leading, huge buffer.
The D3 is somewhere 1 stop less hi ISO effective than the D3s/D4.and, IMHO, the D800"s hi ISO performance falls somewhere between the D3/D700 and the D3s/D4. But the D800 is not even in the same ball game because of 4/5 fps and less convenient controls.

Comparing D700, D800 and D3s, I'd put them in that ascending order. Not used D4. Something to note is that shooting a dark scene the D3s really pulls ahead of the D800 past ISO3200 because of amp noise. Dark scenes exaggerate the D800's amp noise, and while some of that can be clawed back with dark frame subtraction, the D3s doesn't need that extra work.
