Understanding that the 6D AF is not on par with the 7D (which I sold to buy the 6D) or my 1DIII I thought it did a very respectable job. The center point was very sensitive and if I kept the square on the subject it did pretty well. Move off the subject and it falls apart pretty fast. That may be improved somewhat with the limited AF settings. I'm shooting some JV basketball tonight and I'll bring the 6D to shoot alongside my 1DIII. The gym is a dungeon (no strobes allowed) and it will be interesting how the 6D will do with superior ISO vs. 1DIII superior AF. ...Show more →
Let us know how it worked out for basketball. Thanks.
Neil, thanks. I find the tracking similar to or better than any other Canon cameras I've used minus the 1D's. As good or better than my previous 40D/50D and I think better than my previous 5D and 5D2. I shot about 60 frames of geese and/or ducks in flight that day and I'd say at least 45-50 are in good focus. I will post a few more after I process them. I did make a few custom function changes that I thought would help with tracking birds in flight.
Here are the changes I made that seem to help:
CF II-1 (tracking sensitivity) set to -1
CF II-2 (accel/decel) set to 1
CF II-3 (1st image priority) set to Focus Priority
Also, I use the AF-On button for focusing on moving subjects and obviously use AI-Servo with Continuous Drive. And, lastly, of course I made sure the settings were proper for obtaining a good result (shutter speed, aperture, iso). That's it. Hope it helped.
That will definitely help, great insight on the settings. Just got my 6D in the mail so going to try to take some shots soon. Maybe I'll give our dog a workout to test the AI servo.
These pics are all amazing. Currently planning on getting a 6D and have already leitaxed a summicron 50, but was also looking into some cheap prime AF. Ken Rockwell seems to rant a lot about how the cheap primes are pretty good, and I tend to agree with his images. I was wondering if anyone has and can post pics they've taken with the pre-IS 35mm f2. Really interested in that lens. Thoughts?
Note - all shots are at ISO 25600, just for kicks.
1. ISO 25600, 70-200IS L Mark 1, 1.4x with extender, at 225mm, 1/40, no flash, Exp Comp +1 , SOOC with LR 3.6 auto adjustments, then resized to 1024 width. It was quite dim in the room so the AF needed to hunt a bit )low contrast in dog's face). I let it lock in and then took the shot, hand-held. I don't have a particularly steady hand, so this is an amazing shot, IMHO — at ISO 25600, 70-200IS L Mark 1, 1.4x with extender, at 225mm, 1/40, no flash, Exp Comp +1 .

Your pictures should put that myth to rest!
Those planes aren't exactly poking along, great shots
Thank OL. My family and I attended a hot air balloon festival yesterday. I reckon focusing on hot air balloons isn't much of a challenge but shooting photos of speeding race cars during a car drifting exhibition and jet-propelled planes at a remote controlled plane show should be. I'm really amazed on how the 6D handled it. Majority of these photos were keepers
Seems that center AF point works pretty damn good for action, BIF and all other subjects, impressive images from all, you are all showing those FF 6D pixels are lots of EOS fun, great shooting everyone
It was listed as "discontinued" at amazon germany from the beginning on, indeed. I wrote them and they changed it. Does "discontinued" mean its getable used now and much cheaper?
