I agree regarding buying from a source where its safe to return. Then again, the same applies for Canon equipment or Nikon. Returned 2 7d when they came out for poor noise performance, major difference when I got one that actually worked. Returned a couple of d800s to Amazon... so I dont think the issue is sigma only..
My new great deal 50 1.4 is -16 af to focus, but man is it a good lens.
Now you got me curious of the noise on 7D since I just bought one. What reference did you use to determine what noise level is unacceptable?
With the Sigma 35 @ $899, I rather spend $100 more for used 35L.
I'm looking into the 30mm F1.4 too. At that price point, it looks quite impressive!
The difference in noise level and characteristic between the one good 7d that I had vs the others.
Images at ISO 100 had almost as bad noise/pattern as images at 800. ISO 100 actually looked exactly like ISO 400 and ISO 800 at times almost seemed cleaner than ISO 400. Contacted Canon and they asked me to send in free shipping or return to vendor.
As for buying the 35L over the sigma? Unless the sigma has something that the Canon just does better, I might agree with you. The fact that the Sigma actually outperforms the 35L in most aspects (AF is still... unknown), I see no reason to pay extra and lose warranty on a used item.

Since I don't have another 7D to compare to, I will compare ISO 100 to 800 based on what your findings. I didn't notice the noise till around 1600 on mine so that's a good sign.
Oh.. but back to the subject, based on the this review and other threads I've read about Sig's 35mm, it's a great lens. A good copy def. holds it own against the others top 35mm out there now.

hmm, based on the reviews and images I've seen there's not much contest in terms of acuity/contrast - the Siggy leaves them all in the dust.
I ordered the Sigma 35 1.4 and 85 1.4 after talking with the Sigma dealer and they told me some interesting things. After the old man died(Sigma boss/owner) his son took over and he decided to turn Sigma into a premium brand and no longer be a cheap alternative to Canon and Nikon. The first thing he did was that he changed the QC and implemented a new system.
Both lenses were perfect out of the box, no compensation needed for the focus, no need to send them in or return them.
Not being a fan of the 35mm view, I may rethink this and get it.... I like the reports that I have read on this lens. If I get it, It means the other lenses will get less playing time.... oh well...
I had three 7D's over the time and there was a noise level difference between them. I also had three 5Dmk2's over them time and I didn't notice much of a difference between
From what I read, The 5DII sensor is less prone to noise than 7D. So that lack of consistency on your 7D's, is that due to better QC or better design? Seems to be latter. So in relation to APS-C being more prone to noise, primes would help substantially as you can keep the ISO lower?
Damn - very impressive resolution. Looks like Sigma is moving away from being a cheap Canon lens alternative. I'm glad too, as this will give Canon some competition.
They've done this for awhile already. The 50/1.4 was a tall statement of that. But even before that, they had some unique lenses like 12-24 or 120-300 that set them apart. I'm glad this trend is climbing. Hoping to see a 24/1.4 that doesn't cost an arm and a leg come from that stable.

I would say that the problem with my 7D's was a QC type
I did notice that the 7D sensor varies more than on other bodies, especially regarding vertical gain banding. None are all THAT different from each other though, but they do seem to vary a bit more on average than other bodies.
