Most of the shots I have free hand are very very shaky and out of focus.
You might be shooting at too slow a shutter speed. Keeping a minimum shutter speed of 300 or 400 should improve your keeper rate. Of course, developing good hand-holding technique will also help.
I use this lens a fair amount with a D300, and it hasn't let me down. I bought it used about 4 years ago and it has done the job well. I probably use it wide open 80-90 percent of the time. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this lens again.

I upgraded the the 70-200 VR1 to get faster AF, I felt the motor wasn't strong enough in the D7000 to keep up with what I wanted to shoot. No real complaints though other than that. Kinda heavy, but now that I'm using long glass I wouldn't say it is.
