Since launch, the price of the D800 has dropped 600 euros in some countries (example), and even more than that in the UK. Although European prices were higher to begin with, I would certainly expect North American prices to eventually fall too, even if they've been kept up thus far by Nikon's vertical price restraints. Even in the absence of competition (not the case, of course), at some point Nikon would make more money by lowering the price and selling more cameras to price-concious buyers.
