p.1 #1 · Focus system the same on 6D as 5D MK II?

Talked to Canon the other day about the repair of a camera. Struck up a conversation with person on the other end they not only worked at Canon but was also a photographer. Started asking about the 6D she gave me all the answers I wanted to hear.

I said ,"One last question, will we get the focus system from the 5D MK III or an improved version of the 5D MK II".....Her reply was not what I wanted to hear, she said it will be the same focus system that is/was in the 5D MK II.....

I have always been a focus/re-compose kind of guy so it is not a deal breaker but something close to the MK III would be nice.

What say you...

I'm sure it will be tweaked somewhat, but I did not expect the 5d3 AF on an entry level camera. That is just not how Canon operates.

People who pick up phones for Canon aren't necessarily in the know, but it would make sense to use the 5D2 focus when considering past Canon tendencies.

The 6D is an "Entry Level" FF, it's easily pared with the 60D, why would Canon give away even the AF of the 7D let alone the 5D3's or 1DX's advanced AF...the 60D's AF is 9 point also...free just isn't in the equation.

And to say the 6D's AF is same as the 5D2 seems non-sense, the center point alone is different at -3 EV, the outer points are configured differently (why I've no clue). The only common ground is that the new AF chip has a 9 point design.

My 40D and 50D are 9 point designs and I'm glad Canon stayed "Low End" with the 6D's AF. Giving up those red confirm AF rectangles does not hold promise for me, the black dots of the 7D in low light suck, daytime they absolutely rock and the 5D3's AF is even better, but no red rectangles are in the immediate future for other FF bodies. Let's hope Canon figures out the AF confirm issue, combining the red rectangle with the 19 or 61 point AF system would be killer...but it won't be cheap

The price drop of the 5D2 makes it even more attractive, attach DSLRController to it and you've got your smartphone as a remote; kinda WiFi ish. I'm a patient man, will wait for reviews to discover what the 6D's RAW files are capable of...we know what the 5Dc and 5D2 can produce!

I think the 6D is completely different.

It is an 11 point system, by the way. Not 9 like the 5D2.

We had a good chat. She seemed pretty informed, maybe it was because she was a photographer her curiosity lead to asking a few questions around the work place. Might all be a bunch of hooey but just relaying what was told to me.

Thanks dw, you've said it all in one word "eleven" appreciate to correction, it's the red AF confirm rectangles I was mainly "focused" on, 11 points is even better, another reason to keep the 6D in front of the to-buy line, if it's RAW output is fine it's my next buy, here's hoping it's DR is not just NR magic

6D is on par with the 5D3 for shutter lag though = faster than the 5D2. It also has a more sensitive AF system for shooting in dark conditions. Furthermore, like others said, the number of AF points differ. So, it is not the same system as in the 5D2. Still, it would have been great if all the AF points were cross type and Canon gave us 1/8000th instead of 1/4000th.

As said the 6d focus system is most definitely NOT the same as the 5d/5d2.

Different number of points, different sensitivities etc.

Man, I was thinking whether to upgrade to 5D 3 or 6D. Not sure yet.

I guess, what she mentioned was that 6Ds AF is in basic the same like 5D IIs and not comparable to 5D III/1D X (61 AF points and advanced AF system). I KNOW it is not the same alue like 5D II. I shot both cameras next each other. The 6D center point IS much more sensitive, faster and (I guess) more reliable, the outer points where working well (instead of not).

To say something about the added two points: They are just in between the old layout added on the center horizontal axes. Helpfull in many cases. But at least I am pretty sure I will use the center point mainly, like I did with 5D II when I shoot handhold.

I'm not sure what is 'like the 5d' apart from they both work on the same principles?

The outer points on the 6d are as sensitive as the centre point on the 5d2.
6d centre point is -3ev
6D has 11 points the 5d has 9 (or 15).

The trouble with 5DII was that it didn't even match the xxD line in terms of outer focus point accuracy. Even the older 40D had 9 cross points and performed much better than 5DII in focusing using outer AF points. So I think the point is that even if you don't get the 7D or 1Dx AF, at the very least you should expect to get 40D level AF. The other issue is that the 9 or 11 point layout covers less of the FF frame than the APS-C frame further limiting the utility of outer points. Sure 6D is an "entry level" FF camera, yet at $2100 it is still a high-end product and it is not too much to expect at least 40D level of frame coverage and outer points accuracy.

Early reports seem encouraging in that the 6D AF seems to perform better than 5DII.

I'm afraid she's right, unfortunately.
We've even argued about it before (see this post, for example).

The 6D AF system is the same as the 5Dc/5DII AF system - albeit sugarcoated with -3EV sensitivity.
The center AF point has been somewhat enhanced but the outer AF points are exactly the same.

Overall, it's the same AF system from 2005 - but with some tweaks.
Of course this will not be acknowledged until a 6D successor comes out with a better AF system.

Mine definitely did, at least in low light. With ample light 5D / 5DII worked fine as well.

I would not consider the 40D a low light camera.
crop cameras just get too noisy at high ISO

If 6D has usable outer focus points it will be a nice camera.
the built in GPS is very cool

6D may be a nice 2nd camera to go with a 5D III
