I think 35 F/1.4 and F/2 and super different lenses. People who buy F/1.4 or F/1.2 are mostly after the creamy bokeh.

If Lens Rentals is correct, watch for a massive price drop on the 35L used market in coming months...

This Sigma is probably better built than 35L, looks much nicer, most likely will perform as good or better....so it is a great price.

Sigma sharper in the center and not necessarily in corners? Do I get it right?

Looks like it except for the very edges, by f/4 Sigma looks better, but again, extreme edges.

p.5 #5 · Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM first impressions

Well I did get a few minutes to go take some pictures this morning before my wife started throwing the honey-do list at me. I'm liking it more and more. Once thing I'll mention: indoors and out never once did it hunt for focus. I'm not going to split hairs about speed because I didn't make any side-by-side comparison, but I never once thought it was slow. Rather zippy, actually.

Now for some pics, and for those of you who want you can go look or download 100% jpgs from here: http://www.pbase.com/rcicala/sigma_35_f14

Most of these are f/1.4, but a couple are f/2.8 (the sun was bright, even at ISO 150 I had to dial it down).

The flower is at f/2.8, the others at f/2.2 (lots of sun this morning, some f/1.4s coming next)

Here's an f/1.4 flower - lens focuses nice and close.

And another f/1.4 shot (focus on red bridge)

Couple of more random at f/1.4. Focus on the round stone to the right of the bridge in the first one, back of the glass plates in the second.

These are all straight out of camera jpgs, btw, no color correction or anything. I didn't notice any warm cast, camera was a 5D II.

Thanks Roger, these look great. Happy TG, BTW. I like reading all your lens testing, so I am thankful for you.

BTW - if you notice the implements on the right side of the last photo, you'll see that one large knife is missing. My wife was getting serious about the "if you don't stop taking stupid pictures and help me get ready . . . "

I'm saving you money!!! It's cheaper than the 35 L. It's probably $1,500 cheaper than the 35 L II will be.

Buying the Sigma now will be kind of like a vaccination, helping you resist when the II is announced.

let me run this logic by my wife... will report back

Well that would be a first. In general Sigma's offerings hardly have to anything with Canon products and their pricing. I don't see a lot of 35L owners trade their lens for a Sigma. New buyers might be tempted and will have to make decisions where to put their money, but there is hardly a movement from Canon glass owners to Sigma glass in general.

Anyway, having alternatives and all these 35 mm decisions (third party glass, L or IS) they are all kind of EOSfun

You're right they are different, but I still hold an interest in both, with the canon interesting me because of its compact dimensions.

Honestly, if we can discern that the AF system is accurate and consistent, I'm sold.

I hope the value of the 35L doesn't suddenly plummet though, I'd have to keep it if that were the case.

Haven't been overly keen on some of Canon's recent lens design choices/prices, particularly as I don't consider IS is a good substitute for a fast aperture in a prime (thinking about the baffling 24mm and 28mm models). If this Sigma is the herald of a whole new range of top quality kit at competitive prices then I can see a lot of reasons to be happy.

Haven't owned a Sigma for a few years now, perhaps its time to start saving up for one! Will be watching Sigma with keen interest now. Bring on the full reviews and additional lens designs.

thank you to Roger Cicala for being a great resource, as always!

I was waiting for a 35l v2 to come out, but I think this will more than fit my needs. Can't wait to get my hands on one!
