p.2 #1 · Best all-purpose lens with the D200?

My son (15 YO) has "inherited" the 18-105 that came in my D7000 kit. He's welcome to use any of my lenses on his D5100, but he always goes back to the 18-105. It's not stellar in any regards, but it's a great focal length, has VR, and is sharp enough.

+1 for the AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G.

best lens for the money of all nikkor lenses without exception.

Also is very nice on FX.

If your budget were larger I would suggest the AF-S Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G also.

35mm 1.8G or 50mm 1.8G. Let him learn using a prime lens only

Me too. I love this lens. It came with the D70 and I am still shooting it even with my D800e camera. You probably know this lens is a G lens, has got ED lens and focuses fast because it has SWM.

28-105 is a real winner and falls easily within your budget.

I have the 18-70 and it is a pretty darn good lens.

Given the poor high ISO performance of the is body, I'd vote for a 50 f/1.8 or 35 f/1.8.

If he wants for flexibility, the 28-105 is a great choice, also the 24-140 Tamron, sharp but very slow in focusing and aperture.

How about start with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D. Sub $200.

I have the 1.4D, but the 1.8D is just as good I'm sure (if not better overall), from what I've read.
