It will want to be amazingly good if it's a 1.6x cropper and Canon want $3K for it. Relaistically it would need to be $2.5K max and still be a huge improvement over the 7D for a cropper.
If the price is $3000, twice the current 7D price, await the "moaning" threads as this puts the 5DII/5DIII price difference focus into a more natural light.

There won't be many takers for a crop body at $3K. Even $2K would be pushing it.
If it offers 1DX/5D3 AF, improved high ISO, and maintain or increase FPS and MP's then I could see a lot of mid level sports shooters grabbing that at $3K. A crop body to them is a bonus as they will usually not have ultra long glass and so the high pixel density/high FPS combo is an advantage to them over the FF 1DX. Canon has enough general use bodies sitting in the lower price slots, this could easily be a 1D4 replacement.
I would get one in a heartbeat as a companion to my 1DX.

I disagree. If the this gets me a substantial performance improvement then it is a no brainer. It eliminates the need to upgrade my long glass for a while as the crop +300 F2.8 is just barely what I need now, moving to full frame means 400 F2.8 plus a 1.4X.
I think another big upgrade using either the 1DX or 1DIV AF would be having f8 AF. If so, then I would totally go with a 500L II + 7D II rig. Sure there would be an AF speed hit and it's f8, but 1600mm equivalent at about 8 pounds total? Yes please.
