Think of it as more like earning merit badges in Boy Scouts than earning a college Master's degree. Mostly the photographer has to enter prints in state and national competition. They earn a certain number of points for photos that place. Once they earn enough Brownie points, they get their Master's designation. The problem is inbreeding, the photo judges have no qualifications other than being Masters themselves. Few PPA members have any formal training outside or workshops led by people with no formal training.
The one thing of importance to you would be that they have been in business long enough to earn Master, which can be a long process. None of that matters unless you like their work and connect with them personally.
