Nice work Ron, I'll go with 2. Sometimes you can make your own luck but sometimes it is just luck Maybe try shooting at f8 or so more often, you may like the results
I like the pose on #1 and I don't mind the DOF at all, that was a masterful grab shot buddy, looks close to the brances and f/4.5 might not have made much difference anyhow? Cool and in tight!
#2 aren't you supposed to light the bottoms of these?

Great shots Ron! Yep, a little luck does not hurt at all, and I don't mind having a lot of it. The last frame is just a magnificent shot, the small aperture helped (i think) in getting the entire bird in perfect focus. That is really a sweet image.
