Today I just ordered a new 7980 for $2200 delivered. They have a 500-1000 rebate until the end of the month on the 7xxx and 9xxx series. I figured my break even on the printer was about 18 24"x36" ordering from a lab at $125.00 each.

I don't have one of the newer ones, but my 7800 has been running for years without one flaw. It actually flabbergasts me that it's run all these years without once issue. I'm still not sure what you're planning to do with your selection. We're talking large format here and have no idea exactly what you want to print. It might be handy to tell us more about your needs/intentions.

As others have said, your question is hard to answer unless you explain what you are printing, David: Cut sheet, roll paper, large vs. small, canvas, frequent switch between matte and gloss papers, hobbiest with rare printing, pro with near-daily printing, floor space you have available, and so on. What we can say is that it has never been easier and more affordable to make stunningly good prints.

I also have a 3880 and had a 3800 b4 that. Great printers and decent size that don't take up your whole office. Depends totally on the size prints you are going to do regularly, just buy the model that fits the bill.
