p.1 #1 · 2-3 DX Lens kit for India visit (People and Places)? Help Please

I may be going to India by end of the month to attend friends wedding. I will not be visiting tourist places per say but want to do some shoot to capture places and people in the cities I plan to visit. Want to keep my kit to minimum i.e. ideally 2 lenses if not max 3. Here is what I am thinking (Camera D7000)

Option I:

Tamron/Sigma 17-50/f2.8
Nikon 85/f1.8

Option II

Nikon 16-85
Nikon 35/f1.8
Nikon 85/f1.8

I believe this range should suffice what I want to shoot, but I am scratching my head on which would be better.
Could you please share your thoughts or can you think of any third option (keeping $budget ~$1200-1500)

if you're shooting at the wedding, indoors, i'd roll with the nikon 85/f1.8 for sure. i would personally go with the nikon 16-85 as the other lens for general all-purpose use (without having to swap lenses)

+1, in addition to 35 1.8 for low light street shots

I'd take:

Tokina 11-16 / 2.8 - I'm sure that this will be a very used lens there
Nikon 35/1.8
Nikon 85/1.8

I'm not sure what you currently own, but I'd take the D7000 with the following:

*Tamron 17-50
*Sigma 50-150 2.8 (Veey version II)
*Sigma 30/50 1.4 (either)
*Sigma 10-20

All four (or five) lenses should fit within your budget if you buy used - and they are all excellent. At one point, I've owned them all (and I still own the Tamron, Sigma 30, and Sigma 50), and I can't recommend a better collection of lightweight, fast glass.

I was in India a few weeks ago, took my D800 with a 14-24, 24-70, and 50mm. I thought the wide angle would be good for landscape shots but I didn't have the opportunity to really get out. It never left the hotel room. For my walk around and people shots I used the 24-70, never needed the speed of the 50 so I didn't use it. For me, the 24-70 is all I needed.

I'm not sure where in India you will be but you may not need all of those lenses. Personally, I would not use an 85 on a DX body, that is too much reach for my tastes. I would just take the 16-85 and the 35. Gives you a small lightweight kit, a versatile zoom, and a fast lens for low light if needed. The other lenses seem unnecessary.

I have been in India quite often, and I have used different types of kit, but my most versatile choice has been the 18-200VR on DX, I very often needed the 18 and the 200mm. I also used A 28-75 2.8 on the D3. In other words, I would go for a fast standard zoom, the Tamron 17-50 can be a good choice, a versatile zoom like the 18-200VR and a fast prime for low light situations. A wide angle zoom such as the 10-24 could be useful for large buildings or crowded locations.

Option 1 is what I have used (17-55 Nikkor but the focal length is relevant here) as I find it is the best range for most types of shooting.

I would also get a longer lens than the 85. Perhaps look into manual focus alternatives?

That's the combo that speaks most to me, too. Barring that, I'd go with option 2.

A 17-50 f/2.8 works well for me for a basic walkaround lens. A very versatile range of
focal lengths and the f/2.8 gives me some versatility in darker settings. To extend that
a bit, I have the VR version. A lot of people don't like the VR version of the Tamron,
but they probably also have more stable hands than I do.

I don't have an 85mm, so I can't advise you on that, but as it is in both of your kits, it sounds
like you want to take it along. I have a 105mm f/2.8 macro, which I don't usually take on
trips, but I am not usually going to photograph weddings. It does seem like a good
choice for that situation.

I don't know anything about the 16-85, though it sounds like a useful range of focal
lengths. However, no one has mentioned it as a constant f/2.8. For a wedding, I
would think that the faster lens would beat out the extra width on the long end,
and you already are going to have the 85 mm along if you want it for the other end.

So, option #1 sounds good to me.
