I tried this fix to speed up LR4 and not cannon access any of my catalogs since upgrading to LR4. Any thoughts on how to backtrack? Here was the fix:

For Win7 and Vista (people still use this?)

Hit Start, type "%appdata%" (no quotes) and press enter.
Open 'Adobe' folder
Open 'Lightroom' folder
Open 'Preferences' folder
Rename "Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs" to something else (like "old lightroom 4 preferences.agprefs").

Start Lightroom (and make sure you choose your correct catalog). This probably killed a few of your settings, so you can redo those if you feel this sped things up. If you don't feel it's any faster, just repeat the steps above, deleting the new preferences file that Lightroom created and renaming the old one back.

Thanks for your help. I have a real problem and you have jokes. This is why people are leary of posting on these forums.

I fail to see what your actual problem is. What are you quoting and where did you get it from?

What do you mean you can't access your catalogs? Are you getting an error message or is Lightroom just shutting down?

if all you did was the rename, you should be able to get back to where you were before by:

deleting the new preferences file that Lightroom created (in the folder path listed above) and renaming the old one back.

Actually the solution is quite simple. When you delete or rename the Preferences file Lightroom no longer has a record of where the last used catalog is located. So when you restart LR it will usually create a new catalog in the default Pictures folder; of course that's not what you want.

Two ways to solve that problem:

1. Use Windows Explorer or Finder to navigate to the catalog you want to use and double-click it; this will force Lightroom to open with the correct catalog.

2. Press the CTRL/Command key while double-clicking on Lightroom's desktop icon. A "Select Catalog" dialog box will appear and you can use it to navigate to the location of your catalog. In some instances the Select Catalog dialog box will also list all the LR catalogs on your computer (if applicable).

Honestly..... I helped you, Amonline helped you in a different thread too. How about some more information on wether or not the advice that we gave you actually helped?

Responses like yours are exactly why people are leery of helping people on these forums.
