I wouldn't be surprised if they discontinue the 24-105mm and replace it with the 24-70mm F4 IS. That would make more sense than having these two lenses...
That is what Canon Rumors is saying.
Nikon has a 24-85 f 3.5-5.6 as their kit lens for the D600. The 24-70 4.0 constant sounds like a nice "competitor." The best way to acquire it will probably be like the 24-105, as part of a kit.
That may explain why the 24-105 has recently gone as low as $750 new from a kit.
I assume the 70 vs. 85 allowed them to keep the constant 4.0, which is especially nice for video (exposure changes with zooming are a major PITA.)

Well, on the upside, this new 24-70 might drive down the price of the older 24-70 2.8, which is a fantastic lens in it's own right.
I'd be interested in the 35 for around $400-$500, because I could see it being a good alternative to the 35 1.4 if IQ was really good, but I just don't see a whole lot of need for IS in the sub 70mm range.
As for a 24-70 f4, I like the idea, and think it could be really cool, but as stated by others, unless it's in the same price range as the 24-105 (which even adjusted for inflation I think should only be around $1100), I just don't see a lot of success for it.
Bottom line, like I said above, this might drive down the 24-105 price a little more, making it even more desirable for me.

All I care about is optical quality. Either one of these new lenses could possibly fit the bill if super sharp edge to edge. Hope that is the case. As neither the old 24-70mm or 24-105mm is very good in that regard.
But if these prices are true, they are priced way too high for me to upgrade from my existing lenses. So will wait till price drops, and jury is out on these two before even considering purchasing.

I'm not expecting the 24-70 f/4L IS to be priced as high as suggested. It should be part of the EOS 6D kit making it a great compact full frame alternative. When shooting landscape, sometimes the conditions call for only one lens and the 24-105L IS is my choice. However, as much as I think it produces decent IQ, fixing its high wide-angle distortion diminishes this edge quite a bit. If the new 24-70L IS has better distortion control and higher corner resolution, I will be seriously thinking about this trade.

That is kind of what i am thinking too, for those times when a strenuous hike demands I take only one small lens and no tripod... the 24-70 IS could be very nice. I refuse to spend 1800 on it though, I could seriously invest in a mirror less system for that price.

Fred, what about similar IQ with its brother f2.8L II but only in f4L... that will be interesting, similar case with 70-200mm 2.8 and f4

For those complaining about pricing already:
a) They are from a rumor site
b) They are in Yen, not USD. U.S. prices aren't usually a straight Yen-to-USD conversion from Japanese prices.
I agree with those who said that there are some fairly significant issues with the 24-105L and would welcome a better f/4 standard zoom. It's a shame that the 24-70 f/4L loses that much telephoto reach, but if the tradeoff is a lot less distortion then I consider that a reasonable trade, especially if the price comes in at an acceptable level. And just look at how cute it is

Again nothing exciting for me here .....so you will get IS with f/4 in the 24-70 but not in the ridiculously priced 24-70/2.8? 35/2 sounds a bit better, but I will gladly stick to my 35/1.4.....

Wonder if the new 24 - 70 f4L IS will be bundled with the 6D?
Hang onto that Tamron, Jerry......for sentimental reasons if nothing else.
A bundle 6D + 24-70 f/4 ?.
The problem with that is in buying two grossly overpriced items instead of one grossly overpriced item, in order to "save" $38 or something like that.
Wait a year for favourably priced 2nd hand items. No way in hell this sort of pricing can be sustained if they wanna continue selling EOS camera gear in N. America.
