Stan J, Gura Gear has discontinued the Kiboko 30L and have replaced it with the new bataflae. the 32L doesn't hold the 600 f/4 IS ii as well as the discontinued 30L.
maybe you are thinking of the 22L, which will hold a 500mm, but not 600 or 800mm.
i was going to buy one, but the lens didn't fit in the newer bataflae version.

I have all three of their original bags. The only bag that's currently on sale, which you pointed out, is the 22L, which won't hold either the 600 or 800, which is what the OP wanted. The 30L and 32L will both hold the big glass. Whether well or not is another question. I was just correcting your post that the bag that's on sale does NOT hold the big ones, and that remains true.

I agree in spirit with your general statement, but to say that no airline will allow that in the cabin let alone in the overhead bin is a false generalization. All US domestic flights will allow that, and I have flown to Europe on a variety of US and European carriers to experience all sorts of rules, but I never got issues with my photo bag. I actually flew from LAX to SYD on Air New Zealand with a full LowePro SuperTrekker (which in itself isn't carryon-legal, let alone the weight) and got it on board just fine. The way back was a whole different story......Show more →
I hear you Stanj. I have seen lots of variability in application of regulations on countless airlines myself. HOWEVER, you are taking a HUGE RISK if you are overweight regardless of whether or not your bag fits in the overhead bin. You only need to be denied ONCE and then face the issue of "What in hell do I do with all of my EXPENSIVE camera gear in my KICK-ASS backpack if the airline won't allow it in cabin?" problem!! So GuraGear and Lowe and all the others will make the fancy and expensive camera bags but NONE of them address the issue of weight when it comes to carrying it on-board an airplane and INTO the cabin. They are avoiding the issue COMPLETELY.
I do not find weight a problem... The real issue for me is getting on the plane too late (from tight connections) and no space is left in the overhead bin. I purchased a 1510 for that reason but I never used it. I've been lucky so far but I'm actually thinking about putting a $20 or $50 in my pocket to buy a overhead spot from another passenger if I need to.

That's where my incredibly unfashionable but useful photo vest comes in, that will fit - awkwardly but regardless - most of the gear. And I have yet to see an airline that checks or weighs people's jacket pockets

Do you shove your 400DO cum hood into your vest pockets ?

Stanj, that is an incredibly good idea!! I am going to give that a go!

EVERY time when I travel with an ungodly volume of photo gear (which is almost always), unless it's on a local commuter route that I've flown dozens of times before, I either wear that vest or it's in the bag. I had to use this approach only once ("and now what will you do? Feel free to check that empty bag") but it's a worthy insurance. Goes back to the awkward situation at SYD when I had a full SuperTrekker and looked like a deer in the headlights when they asked me to limit it to 7kg (I believe that bag was 3kg when empty).
I think the first question to ask when considering what bag to get is: "if they won't let me take this bag as carry-on, what are my options". I have a number of soft bags that fit my 600, but for air travel it goes into my Pelican 1510. If I ever need to check it at least I know the lens will survive the journey.
Also, if you're flying coach don't forget to pick a seat at the rear of the plane so you can be one of the first on to ensure you get an overhead bin.
For carrying a pro body attached to the new Canon 600mm ii, I just got the Tamrac 5793. It is an excellent backpack and very protective. You need to have the hood stowed/reversed on the lens and its a pretty snug fit, but its an excellent way to carry the setup. No room for other gear inside. Excellent build quality, and fairly compact though fairly tall.

How much else other than the 800 can you then bring with you?
I would like to bring two pro bodies and three to four zooms.
I decided upon the Think Tank Photo Airport Accelerator. Released a few months ago it is the largest carry-on compliant backpack that is below 2kg without dividers. Priced very reasonably and available locally.
I wish it were the Think Tank Photo Airport Security just for the rollers. But again the weight. >.<
I have the Pelican 1510 but I was told by friends using it that the airline check in counter tends to make you check it in because it is a hard case. They generally do not mind fabric-based bags even if it goes more than double the written limit if it contains camera gear. As courtesy I would never go beyond 19kg as the compartment states not to store more than 19kg in it. No, I have not gone double digit with what I bring.
I really like the Tamrac 5793 but find it heavy for the storage capacity and only stores one big lens and pro body.
