IMO, no other lens, however expensive or good it might be, is a sufficient reason to dump 400 f/5.6 which has a unique combination of qualities: very good IQ, very fast AF drive, low mass and relatively cheap.
I got the 100-400L which really only trades the super fast AF speed of the 400 for far more practicality and same IQ. While the 400L's weight was a delight, I can handhold the 300 + 1.4 for long stretches even at eye level and the extra stop speed, 1m shorter mfd, and IS were all worth the trade-off in weight. IQ is slightly better and AF speed is still excellent.

I've done lots of rebuys, but the one I've done over and over was the 135L
Had it with crop sensor and it was too long. Bought it again and it lived on my 5D. Sold it when the 70-200 f/2.8 IS arrived. Bought another when I found out the zoom just wasn't as awesome as the 135. Then, stupidly, did exactly the same thing with the 70-200 f2.8 IS II.
I love that lens for long portraits.
Did the same thing with regards to the 70-200 and 135L. I always found the prime a little tight on the 1.3x crop bodies for indoor sports (mainly gymnastics). Now that I have a 1DX I'm thinking the 135L might be a nice option to the zoom for a different look. Occasionally see them available on the Canon Refurbished page. Getting hard to resist.
None but I would repurchase the Canon 180L and I would repurchase the 70-200 focal with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS Mark II, if I had enough money, right now.
100 Macro 2.8. Both used, both excellent. I rarely shoot Macro and have used it as a basic prime, a low light lens, a portrait lens, and some landscapes!
Would repurchase the 17TS-E, Leica R 60 macro, Leica R 50 Summicron V2, and if I ever went back to aps-c... Tokina 11-16, sigma 30 1.4, canon 17-55 2.8IS
I have bought and then sold 3 different EF 50mm Mk I's only because they sometimes sell really cheap with an old EOS film camera. The one I have right now is in absolutely perfect condition so I have vowed never to sell it and will keep it as a collector's item.
I have also bought, then sold, and then re-bought the EF 35mm 2.0 because it is a very good lens.
Sigma 30mm 1.4 (x3). Kept getting great deals, then finding I just didn't use that FL enough to keep it.
Canon 50mm 1.8 (x3). Same thing.
Canon 35-350 (x2). Sold the first because it was in bad shape and I didn't have the money to see if anyone could fix it. Finally picked up an excellent-condition copy yesterday. It's a lens I just love shooting with.
