100mm f2.8 macro
- 1998 bought used with 1st EOS-3, traded for EF 24-85 and 12/25mm extension tubes in 2006
- 2007 bought new with 1st DSLR 40D, still have it but will upgrade to the L IS next year (new or used)
I've been quite lucky, never have returned a single thing
Or I've no eye for a sharp lens
35/1.4L(sold both the first & second for non-usage.)
50/1.4(twice-finally gave up-love the 40/2.8)
85/1.8(sold the first one & regretted it!)
17-40/4.0L(sold the first one in favor of the 16-35/2.8 I-didn't like it, sold the second one again in favor of the 16-35/2.8 L II-love it!)
100-400/4.5-5.6LIS(sold first one for non-use, now use the fool out of the second one & also the second one is quie abit sharper than the first) Go figure

FD 14L - rebought for use on m4/3
FD 50L - damaged and replaced
I try to avoid the sell n buy shell game. If I decide to sell a lens it is because I no longer have a need for it and do not see a need for it in the future.

Other than the usual non-pro glass:
-Canon 50 1.8 V1 (sold it and regretted selling)
-18-200 Sigma (w/7D for discrete work)(won several awards with it)
-Canon 100-300 Steel mount (gave away when got 100-400)
-Canon 28-70L 2.8 - Love it! will upgrade to the 24-70 L v2 (soon)
-Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS v2 (amazing!)
-Canon 100-400L (Great for wild life and air shows)
-Canon 85L (the perfect portrait lens on the 1Ds Mk3)
-Canon 17-40L f/4.0 (sold but may get another)
-Canon 24-105L (crap lens. sold it)
I'd like to pick up the new 100L Macro. Maybe they'll include it with the 6D.
Not canon, but sold a leica 18mm f/3.8 super elmar-M to the store to fund for the 28mm f/2 summicron-M.
After 3 weeks I kinda missed the lens, so when I came by the store and I saw "my" lens was still there I bought it back.
So not only the same type of lens, but also the very same lens.

I don't view upgrades as a repurchase.
+1
Exactly! I don't view flipping gear as re-buying as long as it is to a different (better) model -- improving the herd. I try to be careful to buy only things I really, really want. And if I get rid of it, I'm walking away, never to return. Otherwise, I'd keep it.
I may eventually re-buy a couple Zeiss ZE lenses that I've jettisoned, making me a big fat liar at that time. But that's not on the horizon any time soon. Ha-ha!
85L II, sold because of lack of use, but the lens is so unique and the images can be so striking -- I want to put more effort into it again.
300 f/4 IS, even though I have the f2.8, I'd like to have the f/4 again for times when portability is an issue.
24-70 II, returned mine but will purchase again when the price better corresponds to the performance of the lens.
Thought about getting another 400 f/5.6L but keep smacking myself in the face and say use your 300 f/2.8L IS + 1.4x which is why you sold the 400 in the first place.

IMO, no other lens, however expensive or good it might be, is a sufficient reason to dump 400 f/5.6 which has a unique combination of qualities: very good IQ, very fast AF drive, low mass and relatively cheap.
